At the WWDC 2023 event held last week, Apple finally unveiled its highly anticipated device the Apple Vision Pro. Launched at a staggering price of $3,499, Apple made two key points clear: first, the headset is designed to “usher in a new era of virtual reality experience,” and second, “it’s not meant for everyone.” However, if the pricing has left you feeling discouraged, Apple may have a solution. Read on to discover more.

A More Affordable Apple Headset Could Be Coming Soon

In his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman disclosed that Apple is gearing up to launch a more affordable variant of the Vision Pro headset. This move aims to make the device more “accessible and widespread.” While it won’t diminish the appeal of the current cutting-edge Vision Pro, it will offer consumers the chance to join the AR/VR movement without breaking the bank.

Now the obvious question is: how will Apple achieve this? What steps can the company take to deliver a similar experience at a more acceptable price point? To address these questions, Gurman has outlined several potential strategies that Apple might employ to lower costs.

Currently, a significant portion of the Vision Pro’s price comes from its camera and sensor array, micro OLED displays, and dual processor architecture. To reduce expenses, Apple may need to opt for lower-quality screens (likely microLED), incorporate fewer cameras and sensors, and utilize an older Mac chipset (potentially the M1 chip) alongside the R1 chip.

In terms of design, Apple could choose to simplify the headband, eliminate the built-in speakers necessary for Spatial Audio, and remove the 3D camera feature, among other adjustments. However, the areas where the Cupertino giant is unlikely to cut costs include the external display known as EyeSight and the hand tracking system.

Gurman suggests that the name “Vision Pro” implies the existence of a ‘non-Pro’ variant in development. He anticipates that this non-Pro version will enter consumer-scale production by 2025.

However, nothing is confirmed yet, so it’s wise to take this information with a grain of salt. We will keep you informed about the new updates and developments. What are your thoughts?
