Major Leak Unveils Chip Details of Upcoming iPad and iPhone Models

With the expectation of new iPad and Mac models later in March, and the iPhone 16 series in September this year, there has been significant speculation regarding the chips that will power Apple’s 2024 device lineup. A recent leak posted on X (formerly Twitter) has added fuel to the fire by revealing chip details for 16 new Apple devices.

The leak comes from a private account known for sharing accurate information about Apple’s plans. While the leaker’s identity remains undisclosed, AppleInsider was the first to report on the leak. The leaker has a small follower list and has protected posts, adding credibility to the information. However, the post did not mention the leaker’s name, instead directly quoting the text from the post.

The leaked information includes codes for 16 new Apple devices, with the first column representing the chip identifier and the third number indicating the internal codenames.

A14 Bionic

It’s expected that the first two devices will feature the A14 Bionic chipset, initially introduced in 2020. These devices seem to be two different versions of the entry-level iPad series. However, considering the existing presence of the A14 Bionic in the iPad 10th-Gen, it raises questions as to why Apple would introduce a new iPad 11th-Gen model with the same A14 chipset again.

There’s speculation circulating for a while now about the possibility of a HomePod with a display, but the likelihood of such a product materializing remains uncertain.

A17 Chip

The following two devices suggest potential variants of the 2024 iPad Mini. If this information holds, it would mark a significant improvement from the A15 Bionic chip present in the current iPad Mini 6 models.

M2 Processor

The subsequent four devices are anticipated to be the 2024 models of the iPad Air, featuring the Apple M2 chipset. Over the past few months, there have been rumours indicating that the upcoming iPad Air model might be offered in two screen sizes: 10.9 inches and 12.9 inches.

The screen sizes mentioned coincide with the 11-inch and 12.9-inch displays found on the iPad Pro 2022 models. By offering two-screen size options within the budget-friendly Air lineup, Apple aims to appeal to a broader range of buyers in that particular market segment.

The existing iPad Air is powered by the M1 chip, while the iPad Pro 2022 series showcases the M2 chipset. Therefore, it’s reasonable to anticipate that the upcoming iPad Air models will make the transition to the M2 chip later this month.

M3 Processor

In discussions concerning Apple’s premium iPad series, the forthcoming iPad Pro is anticipated to introduce a highly anticipated feature: OLED panels. According to the leaker, the upcoming iPad Pro 2024 models will come equipped with a 3nm M3 Apple Silicon
processor.

A18 Chip

The subsequent set of codes features the identifier t8140, the details of which are currently undisclosed. Nonetheless, according to the report, it is speculated to be associated with the A18 chipset, which is anticipated to be introduced with the upcoming iPhone 16 series later this year.

According to the report, Apple is expected to release all four models of the iPhone 16 lineup with the same chipset, including the Pro models. This would deviate from Apple’s recent trend of offering different chipsets for its various iPhone models.

Providing clarification, the leaker informed MacRumors that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will feature an “Apple A18 Prochipset, despite the entire chip lineup sharing the same CPID. Additionally, he indicated that the iPhone 16 Pro models will incorporate a fully functional chipset, while the standard models will utilize binned versions with fewer CPU or performance cores.

As previously noted, the leaker has a reputation for providing accurate information, with a track record that includes correctly identifying beta build numbers ahead of their release, sometimes even days in advance. However, it’s important to exercise caution and maintain a level of scepticism, as with all leaked information.
