The ongoing conflict between Epic Games and Apple is well-known. Essentially, Epic Games argues that iPhone and iPad users should have access to alternative payment options, leading them to introduce their own payment system. In response, Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store, igniting a lengthy legal battle.
According to a post from the Epic Games Newsroom X account, Apple initially rejected the notarization submission for the Epic Games Store marketplace. Apple cited concerns that the install button design and placement closely resemble the App Store’s Get button and in-app purchase label.
Epic contends that their design and naming conventions align with those used by many popular app stores on different platforms and that their app follows standard iOS button conventions.
However, Apple later approved the Epic Games marketplace app, provided that Epic makes changes to the button design and layout. According to an X post by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, Apple has indicated that this change is temporary. Apple also expects Epic to modify the buttons, a change that Sweeney argues will make the store “less standardized and more difficult to use.”
It seems that Apple may be searching for issues with this launch. Under the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), Epic Games is allowed to freely publish its marketplace app and Fortnite on iOS and iPad.
A few months ago, Epic announced the return of Fortnite to iOS and iPad. However, the current situation could become problematic if Apple decides to block the Fortnite launch for any reason.
For now, Tim Sweeney has stated that they will challenge these claims and make the necessary changes. Let us know what you think about these developments in the comments section below.
