The AirPods Pro 2 undergone a recent update, including a new USB-C port in alignment with the latest iPhone 15 lineup. Conversely, have the basic non-Pro AirPods received a similar upgrade? In 2024, Apple is poised to alter this scenario. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, expanding upon his earlier October report, the tech giant plans to unveil two AirPods 4 models.
Gurman, in his PowerOn newsletter, reveals that both variants of the AirPods 4 will showcase a refreshed design, a revamped case (expected to incorporate Find My support, a speaker, and a lanyard loop), and notably, USB-C charging compatibility. Building upon the earlier report, the design is anticipated to combine elements from the current AirPods 3 and the AirPods Pro 2 models.
Curious about the distinctions between the two AirPods 4 models? Well, the more expensive version will boast ANC (Active Noise Cancellation), extending this feature to a more accessible price point. Presumably, this will remain the sole discrepancy between the two models, unless Apple decides to equip the higher-end variant with silicone tips, an addition that could potentially enhance fit and passive noise isolation.

Apple’s aim with this update is to streamline its AirPods lineup, simplifying choices for consumers. The similarity in design and features between AirPods 2 and 3 often confuses buyers, leading them to opt for the cheaper option despite the significant disparity in price.
In addition to the entry-level AirPods, Apple is gearing up to introduce slight modifications to the AirPods Max headphones. Anticipate the lightning port’s replacement with a USB-C port, accompanied by an array of fresh color options.
These upcoming launches mark the gradual phase-out of the lightning port across the entire AirPods lineup. While Apple remains committed to developing health-tracking functionalities, such as body temperature measurement for AirPods, these advancements are still in the distant future.
