YouTube is trying out a new approach to deal with ad-blocking on its platform, which might affect how you watch videos. A recent test has revealed an anti-adblocking feature that halts video playback.
According to reports from Search Engine Land, YouTube is currently experimenting with a fresh anti-adblocking popup. A user spotted a countdown timer within this popup, located in the upper right corner. This discovery was then shared on Reddit, and another user confirmed encountering the same popup. This suggests that the feature might roll out to more users soon. The popup comes with a “notice that ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube“. It also presents three key points: one explaining that video playback is blocked, another emphasizing that ads support the free service, and the last one mentioning ad-free viewing by subscribing to YouTube Premium.
Apart from these messages, the popup displays a timer, lasting for about 30 to 60 seconds, indicating how long users have before the next ad starts. At the bottom of the popup, two options are provided to dismiss it. You can either permit ads on YouTube or give YouTube Premium a try. As of now, YouTube is reportedly testing this feature on specific user groups globally. If you happen to be part of this test, you won’t be able to continue watching until ads are allowed or you subscribe to the Premium service.
This situation isn’t entirely new, as warning messages related to this issue began surfacing as early as June. If you’re determined to enjoy ad-free YouTube content without opting for Premium, your options are somewhat limited. While there are downloader extensions available for offline video viewing, YouTube is also taking steps to address that workaround.
