Google’s Latest Feature: Generative AI Summarizes Articles While You Browse

As 2023 progresses, technology companies are persistently pushing forward with innovations, even as the AI landscape seems to be cooling down. While OpenAI is busy with GPT-4, Google has directed its focus towards enhancing its Generative AI Search (SGE). This effort has culminated in a significant update, enabling Google SGE to provide article summaries as you navigate through web content. Here’s a closer look at this development and other new additions.

Google SGE Introduces Summarization Feature for Browsing

Rany NG, Vice President of Product Management at Google Search, shed light on the latest enhancement in a recent blog post. Referred to as “SGE While Browsing,” this feature aims to simplify and condense web pages and topics into key insights for more effective comprehension. Google’s intent behind this innovation is to “enable users to engage more deeply with longer articles from publishers and creators“.

Accessing this feature is seamless and requires no extra steps. Users visiting certain web pages will have the option to tap and view an AI-generated list of essential points from an article. Additionally, provided links will instantly navigate them to the corresponding paragraphs. “SGE While Browsing” also incorporates a dedicated section called “Explore on Page,” offering a collection of Frequently Asked Questions related to the article. It’s worth noting that paywalled articles are exempt from this feature.

Availability and Rollout

“SGE While Browsing” is accessible to all Google Labs users participating in the insider program. To activate it, users can simply toggle the feature on within Google Labs. Ensuring that Google Chrome is up to date is essential. While this feature is currently available on Android and iOS apps, it will soon be introduced to Chrome on desktop platforms.

Furthermore, Google has enriched its generative AI search with several practical enhancements. These include the ability to preview definitions and visualize diagrams on various topics. For programmers, the generative search has also been fine-tuned to better comprehend and debug generated code. Notably, this entails features like syntax highlighting with color-coded elements, among other beneficial changes.
