2025 is shaping up to be a landmark year for gaming, with GTA 6 set to be its biggest highlight. While Rockstar has kept details under wraps for the past two years, the gaming industry is already gearing up for a significant surge. Greg Rice, Head of PlayStation Creators at Sony Interactive Entertainment, believes GTA 6 will provide a “big economic boost for the games industry.”
In an interview with GamesRadar, Rice shared his excitement, stating, “[GTA 6 is] going to be the best, awesome, giant game for the year, for sure.” He also acknowledged concerns from other developers about launching their games around the same time, saying, “I hear a lot of devs worried about it sucking all the space out. I don’t want to launch during GTA week or even month, because that’s all anyone’s gonna be playing.” Rice, a key figure behind Day of the Devs, highlights just how much impact GTA 6 is expected to have on the industry.
Day of the Devs Lead Says GTA 6 Won’t Compete with Indie Games
“But I think the industry is matured enough that there’s space for that and for other things as well. It’s gonna be a combination of ‘there will be games that will be successful around GTA time because they’re totally different,’ but it’ll also bring a lot more people back into the ecosystem.” continued Rice at GDC 2025, concluding with,
“I’m sure there’s lots of gamers that [GTA 6 will be] the only thing they play, it’ll be the opportunity to get in on the new console generation and see what else is out there. So it’s definitely gonna be a big economic boost for the games industry, and will be a multiple billion dollar title, but I don’t think that it’s at competition with [indie games].”
While most developers are gearing up for the revolution, some remain uneasy about the still-unconfirmed release date. This uncertainty raises concerns that the decade-long anticipation for the next GTA installment could overshadow their own projects.
Rumors suggest that Rockstar Games is in discussions with Fortnite and Roblox creators about developing a GTA 6 metaverse. If this materializes, more game developers could benefit from the year’s biggest title by integrating their products into GTA 6. In turn, this collaboration could boost the visibility of their IPs, creating a mutually beneficial surge in popularity.
With GTA 6 set to launch in Fall 2025, a major topic of discussion in the industry is its potential price. Rumors suggest it could be $100 or more, which may set a new precedent, allowing other developers to justify higher price points for their own games.
