Fortnite has long been a leader in merging gaming with pop culture, with Epic Games frequently tapping into blockbuster movie crossovers, anime, and game collaborations. Now, things could get even more exciting. Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney recently expressed his desire for a future where Fortnite skins, particularly the paid ones, can be used across different platforms.

Sweeney shared this vision during an interview on the Lex Fridman Podcast, where he discussed his idea of creating an ecosystem where all your purchased content remains with you, regardless of where you play.

He also mentioned that the industry is hindered by platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, which keep their paid content isolated from players. During the interview, Sweeney proposed an idea to ensure players can stay connected, even if they are on different platforms.

He said, “All the players and all the different platforms can be recognized by their names. Put the ‘at’ sign in it so your Xbox names, Epic names, and Steam names can all exist together in one space.” This could be an effective way to maintain a player’s profile online, connecting it to all their platforms.

He also mentioned that economic unification is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the industry. Most games share the idea that it should not affect gameplay outcomes. While talking about Fortnite’s future goals, he stated:

The Fortnite Star Wars season is currently underway, and imagine if the Darth Vader skin you purchased in Fortnite could appear in Call of Duty? In essence, Epic Games’ CEO envisions a world where you can buy skins in Fortnite and use them in Roblox or other games. It’s a pretty exciting concept, right? Personally, I’d love to see the cosmetics I buy carry over into other games, especially if those games are free-to-play and not filled with pay-to-win mechanics.
