In a recent update, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced that Threads is enhancing its “Hidden Words” feature. Initially designed for replies, it can now filter out undesirable terms across Threads, including feeds, searches, profiles, and post replies. Mosseri highlights that this expansion is intended to foster a more positive conversational atmosphere for Threads users. Here’s how the feature operates.
How to Hide Phrases and Words in Threads
As anticipated, the functionality operates akin to the Muted words feature on X (previously Twitter), assisting in sidestepping spoilers and sensitive subjects from appearing on your feed. Accessible to all Threads users, the feature enables the banning of particular words. Here’s how to implement it.
- Within Threads, select your profile icon located in the bottom navigation bar.
- Tap on the globe or padlock icon positioned at the top left to access profile settings.
- Navigate to the Hidden Words option.
- Choose the “On” option under “Custom words and phrases.”
- Now, tap on “Manage custom words and phrases.”
- Input the words you wish to conceal, then tap “Add.”
To hide multiple words or phrases, use a comma to separate them before adding additional words. When you tap “Add,” the app will automatically segment them. You can tap on each to edit or delete them individually.
The expansion of Threads offers hope for those fatigued by X and its recent platform alterations. Initially met with significant enthusiasm, Threads experienced a lull in interest, but now witnesses a resurgence of users joining the platform.
With the introduction of the trending page and now hidden words, it’s probable that more features will be adopted from X in the near future. Yet, if these additions contribute to improving the platform’s environment, I’m in favor of them. What feature would you like to see added to Threads next?
