April Fools’ Day, a day synonymous with pranks, took an unexpected turn when Discord’s Loot Box video premiered on YouTube. The video quickly garnered a staggering 627 million views within just 24 hours, making it the most viewed non-music video in that timeframe. Surprisingly, it even surpassed the highly anticipated GTA 6 trailer, which managed 90 million views in its first 24 hours. However, Discord’s achievement in this regard has raised questions about the legitimacy of their record-breaking feat.
Discord Gets YouTube Views with In-App Popup
Despite the immense view count, many doubted the video’s authenticity. This skepticism was later confirmed when several Discord users noticed an in-app pop-up for the Discord April Fools video within the Discord app itself. This pop-up continuously played the video in the background, inadvertently boosting its view count significantly. So, if you happened to click on the Loot Box prompt in the bottom right corner of Discord, you unknowingly contributed to its soaring views.
Various social media users have already highlighted and expressed their opinions on this matter. One user suggested that this should be disqualified from any record. For instance, @NueM4rvin promptly took to social media to share their perspective.
If Discord intentionally manipulated the view count, it would likely continue to increase each time a user opens the Discord app. Reddit user u/Tyler123839 expressed their frustration, stating:
“Even if each user were to restart their client only once per day, that would still amount to hundreds of millions of views daily. Such a pace is staggering. If Discord intended, it could easily surpass Baby Shark’s video in less than a month. Unlike normal videos that typically experience a drop-off in views over time, there would be no reason for the number of Discord restarts to decline.”
“While the loot box feature may have been removed after April Fools’ Day, the repercussions remain. Discord’s official YouTube channel had never previously had a video with more than 10 million views. This strongly suggests that the views on Discord’s YouTube video are primarily from embeds and popups.”
