Whether you’ve been immersed in the Android ecosystem for years or recently transitioned from iOS, the allure lies in its inherent freedom. Android’s flexibility empowers users to customize their experience, molding the OS to reflect their unique style. A longstanding feature that has captivated users is the ability to utilize third-party launchers. However, one brand has consistently presented hurdles: Xiaomi.
For those fortunate enough to have avoided this issue, here’s the story: If you’re using a Xiaomi phone, there’s one significant feature your launcher will lack—gesture navigation. Instead, you’re relegated to navigating with buttons, a method that feels outdated. While some still prefer buttons, swipe gestures offer a more convenient alternative.
This pain is particularly noticeable on larger screens. As an owner of a Xiaomi Pad 5, reaching down to use those buttons can be quite cumbersome. Installing a third-party launcher immediately switches your navigation to buttons. Attempting to revert to gestures by adjusting the Home Screen settings results in a frustrating message: “Can’t use full-screen gestures with third-party launchers.”
Now, thanks to Rajesh Rajput of Technobuzz, there’s a workaround available. He demonstrated the trick’s effectiveness on a POCO F5 via X.
What’s the exact method behind its functionality?
Essentially, you start by downloading your preferred third-party launcher. Nova Launcher (Download) stands out as a top choice. Alternatively, explore other top Android launchers available. After downloading the third-party launcher, set it as your default launcher.
Afterwards, activate Second Space on your Xiaomi device. Navigate to Home Screen settings and opt for Gestures as your preferred navigation method. Return to your primary space, and you’ll notice that gestures are now operational with the third-party launcher.
I tried out this trick on a Xiaomi 14 device we had at the Beebom office. While it’s a clever workaround, it’s a bit temperamental and doesn’t always function smoothly. I found myself having to repeat the steps several times to make it work. Another drawback is that the swipe-up gesture on the home screen to access the recent apps tab doesn’t work with this method. To overcome this limitation, you’ll need to download an app like Fluid Navigation Gestures (Download) from the Play Store. Overall, it’s just…
A hassle you’d prefer to steer clear of.
Xiaomi phones seem to have an aversion to third-party launchers for some unknown reason. While many users might find satisfaction with HyperOS on their Xiaomi devices, the inability to run third-party launchers on Android devices is disappointing.
Although this workaround is relatively straightforward, it’s crucial to execute it correctly. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a phone devoid of gestures, requiring some deep dive into Settings to rectify. Why subject yourself to such hassle in the first place?
I’m curious to hear from other Xiaomi users. Does this issue bother you as well? Drop your opinions down in the comment box.
