Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: Benchmark Comparison

Samsung introduced the highly-anticipated Galaxy S24 series recently, accompanied by the unveiling of its in-house Exynos 2400 chipset. While the standard Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are equipped with the Exynos 2400 chipset in most regions, the top-tier Galaxy S24 Ultra features the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 across all markets. In a previous article, we compared the specifications of the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. In this piece, we present hands-on experiences with the Galaxy S24 Plus, providing Exynos 2400 benchmark results and a comparison with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Note: The benchmark tests were conducted on the Galaxy S24+ powered by the Exynos 2400 and the iQOO 12 featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: Geekbench 6

The Exynos 2400 performed as expected, demonstrated by the Geekbench CPU test results. With a deca-core CPU, the Exynos 2400 scored 2046 in the single-core test and 6687 in the multi-core test. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, with its eight cores, achieved slightly higher scores. Thanks to increased peak frequencies for all cores, it reached 2228 in the single-core test and 6858 in the multi-core test.

Both CPUs exhibit considerable power, and the Exynos 2400 comes remarkably close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which is a notable achievement. However, despite having 10 CPU cores, Samsung’s score in the multi-core test could have been higher. This suggests that TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process is still ahead of Samsung Foundry’s 4nm LPP+ process node.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: CPU Throttling Test

In the CPU throttling test, the Exynos 2400 experienced throttling to 72% of its maximum performance, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 exhibited throttling to 82% of its maximum performance. Notably, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 demonstrated excellent performance even under sustained load. In contrast, the Exynos 2400 initiated CPU throttling after just two minutes of heavy load.

The Exynos 2400 engaged in CPU throttling as a temperature management measure but later returned to its peak performance. In real-world usage, the phone did not exhibit slowdowns, although it did become warm without reaching excessive heat, which is important to note.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: AnTuTu Benchmark

As illustrated in the image below, the Exynos 2400 achieved a score of 1,781,862 points in the AnTuTu benchmark test. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 surpassed the 2 million mark, securing a score of 2,057,772. While the Exynos 2400’s CPU performance closely aligns with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, there is approximately a 30% performance difference in the GPU department.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: 3DMark GPU Test

To assess the GPU, the intensive 3DMark Wild Life test was conducted on both the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. In the Wild Life Extreme test, the Exynos 2400’s Xclipse 940 GPU achieved a score of 4,304 with 25.78 FPS, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s Adreno 750 GPU scored 5,114 with 30.63 FPS. This results in an approximate 18% difference in GPU performance.

In the more demanding 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress test, the Exynos 2400’s Xclipse 940 GPU secured the best loop score of 4,259 with a stability of 63.4%. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s Adreno 750 GPU achieved the best loop score of 4,564 with a stability of 60%.

This comprehensive GPU test highlights the Exynos 2400’s commendable performance, showcasing its competitiveness against the leading mobile GPU in the market. Notably, the Xclipse 940 6-core GPU even outperforms Apple’s A17 Pro 6-core GPU (4,110 score), demonstrating Samsung’s development of a powerful GPU with the AMD RDNA 3 architecture.

Finally, let’s examine the Solar Bay test, which assesses the ray tracing capability of the GPU. In this test, the Xclipse 940 GPU has demonstrated remarkable performance, showcasing performance levels comparable to the Adreno 750 GPU. Both GPUs scored similarly in this aspect.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: AI Benchmarks

Samsung claims that the Exynos 2400 features a powerful new AI engine that is 14.7 times faster than the last-gen NPU on the Exynos 2200. In our Geekbench ML test, where both mobile chipsets performed similarly when running on the CPU, the Exynos 2400 delivered wildly inconsistent results in other AI benchmark tests.

For instance, the Exynos 2400’s NPU engine scored a modest 41,020 points on the AITuTu benchmark, in stark contrast to the massive 1,422,010 points achieved by the 8 Gen 3. This discrepancy could be attributed to software incompatibility or the need for developers to add framework support for the Exynos 2400’s new AI engine. Consequently, we have opted not to publish the remaining AI benchmark results for the Exynos 2400’s NPU.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: 5G Speed Test

In the 5G speed test, the 5G modem on the Exynos 2400 surprisingly outperformed the X75 5G modem on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Exynos 2400 achieved download speeds of up to 386 Mbps and upload speeds of 49.8 Mbps. In contrast, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 provided a maximum download speed of up to 338 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of up to 54 Mbps. It’s worth noting that the same 5G Airtel SIM was used on both devices for the test.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: Final Verdict

Samsung has engineered a formidable chipset capable of competing with the best mobile chipsets in the market. Despite the throttling issue, there are very few drawbacks to the Exynos 2400 chipset. It has significantly narrowed the gap in the GPU department, and the CPU has surpassed expectations. Additionally, Samsung has excelled in the development of the 5G modem.

While the Samsung Exynos 2400 may not outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in every benchmark test, it stands among the top-tier flagship SoCs. This concludes the benchmark comparison between the two chipsets. ADoes the performance of the Exynos 2400 impress you? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
