In 2023, Nothing had a notable year. The startup launched the Phone (2), the successor to its highly successful initial phone, garnering positive reception. The upgrade in specifications from Phone (1) to Phone (2) was substantial, accompanied by a higher price point, which led to some criticism of the Phone (2) in markets like India. This situation may be prompting Nothing to develop the much-discussed Nothing Phone 2a, positioned as a budget-friendly variant with lower specifications derived from the Nothing Phone (2). Here’s all the information available about the Nothing Phone (2a) to date.
Launch Date of Nothing Phone 2a
Nothing Phone (2a) is set to launch on March 5, at 11:30 AM IST, and it’s being marketed with the tagline “Fresh Eyes,” hinting at a possible horizontal camera setup, as suggested by leaked images.
While this announcement originates directly from Nothing, there’s a chance it might pertain to a different product, delaying the Phone 2a’s arrival. However, given the timing of this announcement aligning with recent leaks, it’s highly probable that the Phone 2a will indeed be unveiled during the event.
Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, officially confirmed the existence of a new phone in a recent post on X (formerly tweet). This confirmation strongly suggests that the company’s presentation at MWC 2024 will feature the debut of the Nothing Phone 2a, internally known as Aerodactyl (as detailed in the tweet below).
Design & Display of Nothing Phone 2a
Recent leaks indicate that the Nothing Phone 2a will feature a 6.7-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a centrally positioned punch-hole design. Speculation suggests that the device’s front design will closely resemble that of the Nothing Phone (2).
While not confirmed, it’s unlikely that the Phone 2a will use the same display panel as the Phone (2), which utilizes an LTPO panel at a higher cost. Instead, the Phone 2a is anticipated to employ a standard OLED panel, positioning itself as a mid-range phone competing against the Pixel 7a and the Moto G series. Recently, the device surfaced online concealed in a PVT case, offering a glimpse; you can check it out here:
The anticipated design of the Nothing Phone (2a) suggests that while its front may resemble its higher-priced counterparts, the company is embracing a distinctive back layout to differentiate it from the flagship Phone 2 and Phone 1.
According to leaks initially disclosed by leaker Dylan Roussel on X (formerly Twitter), the Phone 2a will sport a redesigned back housing three glyph lights encircling the rounded camera module. This count is notably lower than the number of glyph lights featured on the Phone 2. However, reassuringly, all the familiar features found in existing Nothing phones, including the progress bar, music visualizer, timer, and more, are expected to be retained in this model.
If you prefer a phone that’s less flashy with incoming calls or notifications, the Nothing Phone (2a) seems tailored to meet your preferences. Additionally, as this phone is anticipated to forgo wireless charging, the design team at Nothing had to forego the charging coil design. Consequently, you can expect a battery connector running along the lower half of the phone instead.
Specifications of Nothing Phone 2a
All recent leaks since last month have indicated that the Phone 2a will be equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 chipset. For those unfamiliar, the Dimensity 7200 is a mid-range System on Chip (SoC) also featured in other popular phones such as the iQOO Z7 Pro. Known for its commendable price-to-performance ratio, it features an Octa-core CPU configuration comprising 2x Cortex-A715 performance cores clocked at 2.8GHz and 6x Cortex-A510 efficiency cores. The chipset incorporates the ARM Mali-G610 MC4 GPU.
While the Dimensity 7200 falls short in performance compared to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 present in the Phone (2), it offers decent everyday performance and surprisingly capable gaming capabilities. Recent leaks suggest the phone will be available in two RAM and storage variants: 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB. Although the storage class hasn’t been confirmed, it is likely to be UFS 3.1.
Rumors indicate that the Nothing Phone 2a will come pre-installed with Nothing OS 2.5 based on Android 14 upon release. The recent rollout of Nothing OS 2.5 for both Phone (1) and Phone (2) introduced numerous enhancements over the previous Android 13-based OS 2.0.
While it remains uncertain whether the Phone 2a will inherit features like glyph progress or other exclusive functionalities from the Phone (2), such as expanded addressable LEDs, it’s plausible that these advanced features might not be present in the (2a) considering its positioning as a budget offering.
Cameras of Nothing Phone 2a
Based on recent leaks and rumors, the Nothing Phone 2a is speculated to feature a dual rear camera setup, similar to flagship phones. This setup might comprise a primary 50MP ISOCELL S5KGN9 sensor accompanied by a secondary 50MP JN1 ultrawide sensor.
In contrast to existing Nothing phones, which have vertical camera placements at the top-left corner, the Phone (2a) could adopt a horizontal camera setup positioned at the center of the rear panel.
The primary “S5KGN9” sensor is reportedly the same sensor found in the Moto G84, and the overall camera arrangement resembles that of the Nothing Phone (1) and Phone (2). Additionally, rumors suggest that the selfie camera might feature a popular 32MP front snapper equipped with the Sony IMX615 sensor.
Battery & Charging of Nothing Phone 2a
While there’s no official confirmation regarding the Nothing Phone 2a’s battery specifics, it’s speculated to house a 4,500mAh battery capacity coupled with 33W fast-charging capabilities. This configuration represents a slightly reduced capacity and charging speed compared to the Nothing Phone (2), aligning with the positioning of the Phone 2a between the Phone (1) and (2).
Anticipate the device to feature a USB 2.0 Type-C charging port, extensive support for numerous 5G and 4G bands, along with compatibility for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
