Google’s Pixel a-series as one of the most sought-after smartphone segments in the industry would be an understatement. Google has consistently delivered “a” series devices that have resonated well with many seeking upper mid-range smartphones. With an anticipated continuation of this winning formula, Google is gearing up to unveil the Pixel 8a next year. While the precise release date for the Pixel 8a remains undisclosed, here’s a roundup of rumored specifications and what can be expected from this device.
Pixel 8a Release Date
As of now, there’s no official launch date set for the Pixel 8a. However, considering the Pixel 7a’s release in May last year, speculation suggests that Google might unveil the Pixel 8a around the same time in May 2024.
Pixel 8a Design
Prominent leaker Abhishek Yadav revealed initial images of the Pixel 8a in its entirety before the launch of the Pixel 8 series, offering a sneak peek into the device. Subsequently, high-quality images of the Pixel 8a surfaced post the Pixel 8 series launch, courtesy of OnLeaks, a reputable figure renowned for credible smartphone leaks.
The first set of leaked images aligns with the renders and appears potentially authentic. The leak hints at dimensions for the Pixel 8a measuring 152.1 x 72.6 x 8.9mm, showing a slight reduction in height and thickness compared to the Pixel 7a’s dimensions of 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0mm. Its design, with distinctive curves, presents a slightly smaller appearance than the Pixel 8, lending it a charmingly cute aesthetic.
Similar to previous A series devices, the camera visor on the Pixel 8a protrudes minimally, akin to the design of the Pixel 7a and Pixel 8 series. However, unlike the Pixel 8 series, the bezels surrounding the screen are notably thick, quite noticeably so! Positioned at the center, the front camera features a hole punch, while the power and volume buttons adhere to the familiar Google layout on the right-hand side.
In essence, disregarding the visor, the Pixel 8a seems like an enlarged rendition of the Pixel 4a (?), possibly with slightly more curved edges.
Pixel 8a Display
Not much information has surfaced regarding the Pixel 8a’s display. Given its mid-range classification, an anticipated Full HD+ panel with a peak brightness of approximately 1000-1200 nits in direct sunlight seems reasonable.
It’s plausible that the display’s refresh rate might be limited to 90Hz, maintaining a distinction from the Pixel 8 in terms of both price and specifications, thereby avoiding potential competition with the latter.
Regarding the screen size, expectations point to a 6-inch diagonal measurement. The images suggest substantial bezels, potentially larger than those seen on the 7a, although it’s premature to draw definitive conclusions. It seems symmetrical bezels might not be a highlight in mid-range devices this year.
Pixel 8a Processor
Similar to its predecessors, the Pixel 8a is expected to feature a Tensor SoC, specifically the Tensor G3. Following the tradition set since the Pixel 6a, the a-series device typically shares the same Tensor SoC as the flagship Pixel series released in the same year.
However, the Tensor G3 hasn’t received stellar reviews. Persistent problems like throttling, underwhelming performance metrics, and heating issues continue to linger, and it’s unlikely that the Pixel 8a’s performance will deviate from this trend. Generally, performance isn’t a primary consideration for Pixel buyers, leading us to the most pivotal aspect that Pixels are renowned for.
Pixel 8a Cameras
Limited details are available regarding the Pixel 8a’s camera specifications. Given Google’s tendency to maintain consistency in camera hardware, it’s anticipated that the Pixel 8a might feature the same 64 MP sensor as seen in the Pixel 7a.
If Google does stick with the 64 MP sensor, it could likely be the Sony IMX787 sensor. The secondary camera might be an ultra-wide angle lens with an expanded Field of View (FoV). For the front camera, the Pixel 8a might retain the 13 MP sensor seen in the Pixel 7a.
It’s essential to approach this information with caution as there’s no confirmed data available regarding the Pixel 8a’s camera specifications. However, considering the substantial reliance of Pixels on Google’s intensive post-processing, the hardware might not significantly impact the overall performance.
Battery
The anticipated Google Pixel 8a is likely to feature a battery similar to that of the 7a, which boasts a 4385 mAh cell charging at 18W. While a battery capacity exceeding 4000 mAh is generally commendable, one aspect we hope Google upgrades in the 8a is its charging speed.
Compared to the lightning-fast charging speeds observed in mid-range devices from Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Realme, and OnePlus, the Pixel 7a’s current 18W charging capability seems notably slow. The Pixel 8 saw an enhancement in charging speed to true 23W levels, marking a significant improvement, considering previous Pixels charged at speeds 3W slower than their marketed values. Therefore, it would be prudent for Google to contemplate upgrading the Pixel 8a’s charging speed to at least 23W.
Pixel 8a Colors
Based on leaked images, it’s anticipated that the device will launch in two colors – Bay and Porcelain. Google might opt for different naming conventions, but the essence remains the same.
Pixel 8a Pricing
If our forecasts materialize, we anticipate Google pricing the Pixel 8a at a similar rate to the Pixel 7a, around $499. Considering features like a 90Hz capped display, a plastic back, and potentially dated hardware, the $499 price tag appears reasonable and justifiable.
