What is Android 15’s Notification Cooldown Feature and How to Activate It

The initial developer preview of Android 15 debuted in February 2024, followed by subsequent releases of developer previews and the first beta. While these iterations didn’t introduce significant UI alterations, they did unveil a crucial addition: Notification Cooldown. This feature aims to prevent repetitive notifications on your device by providing a useful solution.

In this guide, we’ll delve into what Notification Cooldown entails, how it functions, and how to activate it.

What is the Notification Cooldown Feature?

The Notification Cooldown feature gradually reduces notification volume and vibrations when multiple notifications from the same app arrive within a short timeframe. This prevents your phone from incessantly buzzing and ringing due to a flurry of incoming notifications.

Imagine having a friend who floods your inbox with messages or being in a lively group chat that never seems to stop. In such cases, the Notification Cooldown feature proves incredibly handy. However, if you’re concerned about potentially missing important notifications from specific apps, there’s no need to worry. Google has considered this scenario too and included an option to activate Notification Cooldown solely for conversations.

Google has enabled this feature by default, at least in this developer preview. Nevertheless, we’ve prepared a step-by-step guide on how you can toggle this feature on or off on your Android 15-powered device.

Activate Notification Cooldown on Android 15

  • Access the Settings app and select “Notifications.”
  • Scroll to the bottom and choose “Notification Cooldown.”
  • Select the Notification Cooldown option.

  • Here, you’ll encounter three options to choose from. To activate this feature, select “Apply cooldown to all notifications.”
  • To apply it specifically to text chats, select “Apply cooldown to conversations.”
  • If you opt to disable the feature entirely, choose “Don’t use notification cooldown.”

That’s how you can toggle the Notification Cooldown feature on or off on your Android smartphone. There’s a possibility that this feature could undergo further enhancements in upcoming beta builds. Personally, I’m hoping Google will include the option to enable this feature on a per-app basis. Nonetheless, it’s a notable addition, albeit one that many wish had arrived earlier on the platform.
