Sam Altman has been a prominent figure representing OpenAI, the AI company backed by Microsoft. As a founding member, Altman has guided the company through numerous innovations, notably the widely-discussed ChatGPT. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the company’s board has announced the dismissal of Sam Altman from his role as CEO.
According to an official blog post published by the company on November 17, it has been announced that Sam will step down as CEO and resign from the board of directors with immediate effect. The company’s official statement in the post points to “a consistent lack of openness in his communications with the board” as the reason for this decision.
“Mr. Altman’s exit follows an extensive board review, which found his communication lacked consistency and transparency, hindering the board’s ability to carry out its duties. Consequently, the board has lost confidence in his capacity to continue leading OpenAI.” – OpenAI
Altman publicly addressed the news via an X (formerly Twitter) post. The former CEO described his tenure at OpenAI as “transformative and expressed his admiration for the team“. He also pledged to share further details about his future endeavors at a later time.
Mira Murati to Assume Interim CEO Role
Following Sam Altman’s departure, a successor is imperative. Consequently, the board has designated Mira Murati as the interim CEO of the company. Murati, previously serving as the company’s chief technology officer, has received commendation from the board for “her skill set and deep comprehension of the company’s values and operations“. Nevertheless, OpenAI has affirmed its intention to conduct a formal search for a permanent CEO.
Moreover, co-founder and chairman Greg Brockman will be stepping down but will continue in his position at the company. His decision to resign is directly linked to Altman’s dismissal. The former chairman also communicated this news via an X post.
This announcement is quite surprising and likely to create ripples in the AI community for a while. The repercussions remain to be seen. Share your opinions about Sam Altman’s departure from OpenAI in the comments section below.
