WhatsApp Begins Rolling Out Usernames, Eliminating the Need to Share Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is finally introducing its long-awaited usernames feature, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. After months of testing, the feature is now gradually rolling out to select Android and iOS users on the stable version of the app.

WhatsApp Usernames: How the Feature Works

As first reported by WABetaInfo, the usernames option is being released to a limited group of users. Those who have access can find it within the Profile settings section of the app.

Users can create a unique username, but there are a few rules to keep in mind. Usernames can only include lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods, and underscores.

There are also specific restrictions usernames cannot begin with “www” or end with domain extensions like “.com” or “.net.” Additionally, each username must be unique and not already used across Meta platforms like Instagram or Facebook. This helps reduce impersonation risks, scams, and potential misuse.

Users also have the option to link their Instagram or Facebook profiles, making it easier for others to discover them. Once a username is created, it must be connected to the Meta Accounts Centre. WhatsApp also introduces an extra privacy layer with a username key a one-time code required when someone new tries to initiate a chat, ensuring better control over who can contact you.

To start a conversation using usernames, users can search directly within their contacts or through the app’s search function. If the account has a username key enabled, the sender will need to enter it before messaging.

Importantly, all chats initiated via usernames will continue to be protected with WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, maintaining the platform’s privacy standards.
