When Anthropic launched its “Computer Use” feature last month, we shifted from thinking “oh, it’s just a movie” to realizing “it’s happening.” For those unfamiliar, Claude 3.5 Sonnet’s “Computer Use” feature allows the AI to take control and complete tasks for you. Now, Google is ready to fulfill your Iron Man fantasies with its own Jarvis AI agent.
According to The Information, Google may have accidentally uploaded an internal preview of the extension to the Chrome Web Store. However, if you’re thinking of checking the Store now, don’t bother Google swiftly took it down. Those who managed to download the tool during its brief availability didn’t have much luck either. The prototype required specific access permissions, preventing users from getting it to function properly.
Internally referred to as Project Jarvis, the Chrome Web Store listing described the tool as “a helpful companion that navigates the web alongside you.” This aligns with previous leaks suggesting that Jarvis could function as a web automation agent. In essence, it would take control of your Google Chrome browser to perform tasks on your behalf. Whether it’s simplifying online shopping or helping you book the best tour packages, the potential uses for Jarvis seem limitless.
While details about how Google’s Jarvis tool will function remain unclear, it’s expected to operate similarly to Claude 3.5 Sonnet’s Computer Use. In Anthropic’s release blog, they demonstrated how their tool could extract data from Excel sheets and search online portals to fill out forms with relevant information. It achieves this by screenshotting the screen and capturing the required data. Additionally, the process is displayed in a panel on the left for users to track the entire operation.
Google’s very own Jarvis isn’t far off. According to the report, Google plans to unveil it in December, and we’ll get a detailed look at how the tool will function at that time.
With the rise of AI-powered search engines like OpenAI’s SearchGPT, new tools like ChatGPT Advanced Voice, Gemini Live, and even Anthropic’s Computer Use, the potential of AI seems boundless with each passing day. The prospect of having a web-browsing AI companion that does more than just answer queries is definitely exciting.
