OpenAI has officially launched Sora, its AI-powered text-to-video generator, making it available to the general public as part of the ongoing “12 Days of OpenAI” campaign. Originally announced nine months ago, the release faced delays due to extensive safety testing. Now, users can access the enhanced Sora Turbo model, which OpenAI claims is faster and more efficient than its predecessor.
To access Sora, simply visit sora.com no additional subscription is required. If you already have a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription, you can start using Sora right away. The platform lets you create AI-generated videos up to 20 seconds long in 480p, 720p, or 1080p resolutions. While generating full HD (1080p) videos takes a few minutes, 480p videos can be created much more quickly.
You can now input detailed text prompts to generate videos using Sora. Additionally, you can upload images and videos to serve as a base, then add your own prompt to create AI-enhanced videos. However, Sora strictly prohibits uploading media featuring people without their consent or individuals under the age of 18.
Sora also prohibits media containing violence, explicit content, or copyrighted material. OpenAI warns that violating these guidelines may result in account termination and a permanent ban, with no refunds provided.
Sora offers innovative features like “Remix,” which allows you to add a new prompt to an existing video and transform it into something entirely new. You can even adjust the Remix strength to control the intensity of your edits. Additionally, Sora’s “Storyboard” feature lets you create videos on a timeline, enabling you to combine multiple text prompts seamlessly into a continuous video.
When it comes to the quality of Sora-generated AI videos, the initial impression reveals some limitations in handling realistic physics. Sora often struggles with concepts like gravity, motion, and momentum in videos featuring human or object movements. However, it excels at creating animated videos and abstract scenes, delivering impressive results. Additionally, it handles text generation within videos with notable accuracy.
Sora is available in most regions, excluding the UK and Europe. ChatGPT Plus users can create up to 50 videos per month (720p resolution, 5 seconds), while ChatGPT Pro users can generate up to 500 videos (1080p resolution, 20 seconds).
