WhatsApp has been busy lately, rolling out new features like AI image creation from attachments, the ability to like status updates, and more throughout September. Now, as we enter October, WhatsApp has officially introduced Filters and Backgrounds for video calls.
This update is designed to make video calls more interactive and fun. In their official release blog, WhatsApp states, “…we’re rolling out filters and backgrounds to make your video calls even more engaging. With these new effects, you can now change your background or add a filter during a video call for a more personal touch.”
The blog post highlights how filters can create “playful atmospheres” during video calls. Additionally, the emphasis on backgrounds is geared toward helping users maintain their privacy, which is a great feature for anyone who might feel embarrassed about showing a messy room.
You can choose from ten unique filters and backgrounds. WhatsApp states, “You can select and mix a wide range of options to create a unique look.” The filter options include Warm, Cool, Black & White, Vintage TV, Light Leak, Prism Light, Fisheye, Frosted Glass, Dreamy, and Duo Tone.
For video backgrounds on WhatsApp, users can select from options such as Blur, Living Room, Office, Café, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration, and Forest. Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced Touch Up and Low Light modes to enhance and brighten your environment, improving clarity and aesthetics during video calls.
To access these features during a video call, WhatsApp users simply need to tap the magic wand icon at the top right corner to bring up the filters and backgrounds panel. From there, they can choose their preferred options.
That said, these features aren’t entirely new for WhatsApp Beta users. WABetaInfo noted in June that this functionality had been introduced to the WhatsApp beta for Android. Nonetheless, it’s great to see the feature officially launch for the public. Over the next few weeks, it will gradually roll out to all users on both Android and iOS.
Additionally, another WABetaInfo report indicated that these filters and backgrounds will soon be available in the native WhatsApp Camera, allowing users to utilize them on the go.
