Apple introduced its first mixed-reality headset in February 2024. Initially, there were rumors that the second-generation Vision Pro had been put on hold in favor of developing a more affordable headset. However, recent reports tell a different story. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is actively working on the next generation of Vision Pro, which is expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2025.

Kuo highlights that a key feature of the Vision Pro 2 will be the incorporation of Apple’s M5 chipset, representing a significant upgrade from the first Vision Pro, which uses the M2 chip. While details about the M5 processor are limited, the transition from M2 to M5 is anticipated to dramatically enhance computing power and deliver advanced Apple Intelligence features. Additionally, the M5 is expected to outpace the already impressive M4 chipset, which is the latest in Apple’s Silicon lineup.

It’s important to note that, despite its powerful internals, the overall design and other hardware specifications of the Vision Pro 2 are likely to remain unchanged. This strategy could assist Apple in controlling production costs. The price for the Vision Pro 2 is speculated to align with that of the first-generation model, which starts at $3,499. Additionally, there have been rumors of Apple developing a more affordable version of the Vision Pro featuring a lower-resolution display, but no details about its expected release date have surfaced yet.

Kuo indicated that the price of the M5 Vision Pro may not see significant changes; however, Apple might implement strategic approaches and develop compelling use cases to achieve mainstream adoption. This is especially crucial following the lackluster sales of the first Vision Pro. He also noted that Apple could integrate technology similar to OpenAI’s Sora, which could greatly enhance the Vision Pro experience. The effects of text-to-video AI models would be particularly striking on a head-mounted display compared to current mainstream consumer electronics.

Mark Gurman reported that Apple intends to introduce Apple Intelligence features to the Vision Pro headset in the future. While the headset will support on-device AI functions such as an updated Siri, writing tools, and notification summaries, these features may not be available in 2024. Instead, Apple might hold off on integrating Apple Intelligence until visionOS 3, which is expected to launch in 2025.
