Until iOS 16, you had to rely on the Speak Screen feature to have Siri read text aloud on your iPhone. However, iOS 17 introduces some exciting new features, one of which is the ability to have Siri read web pages to you. Your trusty virtual assistant can now read web pages just like audiobooks. What’s more, Siri can do this even when your iPhone is locked. So, you no longer need to hold your phone or strain your eyes to read lengthy articles. Just sit back, relax, and listen. In this hands-on guide, we’ll show you how to make Siri read web articles for you on an iPhone running iOS 17.
Prerequisites:
1. The web page must be opened in Safari. Siri will not read web articles for you in third-party web browsers.
2. The web page should be compatible with Safari’s Reader View, which eliminates ads, images, and other content, providing you with a clean, readable text.
3. To determine if a web page supports Reader View, search for “Reader Available” or tap on the “aA” icon and see if the “Show Reader” option is clickable. If it’s grayed out, the web page isn’t compatible with Reader View.
Method 1: Using Siri Command to Read Articles
In iOS 17, you have two methods to make Siri read web pages aloud. Let’s discuss the first method. After opening a compatible web page in Safari, you can command Siri to read the article. Here’s how:
- Simply say “Siri, Read this to me.” In iOS 17, you don’t need to use the prefix “Hey” to activate Siri.
- Alternatively, press and hold the side button on your iPhone to activate Siri, and then say or type “Read this” or “Read this to me.”
- Siri will begin reading the content and display the media panel in the upper-right corner of the screen. You can pause, rewind, and fast-forward the spoken audio. Even when you lock the screen, Siri will continue to read the content for you.
Method 2: Using Listen to Page feature
iOS 17 introduces a new Safari feature called ‘Listen to Page,’ allowing you to listen to the content of a web page. When you use this feature, Siri will read the selected web page for you. Here’s how to use it:
- To activate Siri, tap the “aA” icon located in the search bar.
- In the pop-up menu, tap the “Listen to Page” option.
- Siri will immediately start reading the web page to you.
- When your iPhone is unlocked, you won’t see any media controls on the screen. To stop Siri from reading, tap the speaker icon in the search bar, and choose the “Listening Controls” option.
- You can then utilize the rewind, pause, or fast-forward options, or opt to “End Listening.”
- If you pause listening, you’ll find a “Resume Listening” option in the “aA” menu. This option is available even if you switch to another task and return to the web page later.
- Siri will continue to read Safari articles for you, even when the iPhone screen is locked. It will show a preview with media controls on the lock screen.
So, as you can see, it’s quite simple to listen to a webpage in Safari on iOS 17.
