All iPhone 16 and 16 Pro Camera Specifications Leaked Ahead of Launch

Apple is gearing up to unveil its latest iPhone 16 series in a few weeks, with leaks suggesting a possible release date of September 10. While we await an official announcement from Apple, new rumors and speculations about the iPhone 16 are surfacing. Recent leaks focus on the camera systems and the rumored Capture button for the iPhone 16 models.

According to Apple Insider, each iPhone 16 model will feature upgraded camera systems. Sources also indicate that Apple plans to introduce significant changes, including a higher-resolution ultra-wide camera and the long-rumored Capture button.

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus Camera Details

According to the report, both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will feature a dual-camera setup on the rear. This will include a primary wide camera with 1x and 2x zoom capabilities and a secondary ultra-wide camera for capturing broader scenes with 0.5x zoom. The primary camera will remain unchanged, featuring a 48MP sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and 2x optical zoom capabilities.

On the other hand, the ultra-wide camera will feature a faster f/2.2 aperture, compared to the f/2.4 aperture on the current iPhone 15. This improvement will enhance low-light photography, allowing users to capture more detailed night shots. For the first time, the base models are also expected to support macro photography.

In line with previous design rumors, the cameras on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will be arranged vertically, reminiscent of the setup seen on the iPhone 12.

iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max Camera Details

While it’s exciting to see upgrades for the standard iPhone 16 models, the more expensive Pro models are rumored to bring even bigger changes. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will retain their triple rear camera system, including the 48MP primary sensor with an f/1.78 aperture. The telephoto lens will stay unchanged, with a 12MP sensor and an f/2.8 aperture. However, the great news is that the 5x telephoto lens, previously exclusive to the Pro Max, will now be available on both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. Unlike the 3x telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 16 Pro will also feature this advanced zoom capability.

The ultra-wide lens is also set for a significant upgrade, moving to a 48MP sensor with a pixel-binning feature similar to the 48MP primary camera. This enhancement will offer flexible pixel sizes, such as 0.7-micrometer pixels for full-resolution shots or 1.4-micrometer pixels for improved low-light performance when used as a quad pixel, according to Apple Insider. Additionally, there are indications that the iPhone 16 Pro models will support 48MP ProRAW photo capture.

Support for New Image Formats

The report also unveils additional details about the upgraded camera systems. The new iPhone 16 series is expected to introduce a new image format called JPEG-XL, which will be available alongside the existing JPEG, HEIF, HEIF Max, ProRAW, and ProRAW Max formats.

Furthermore, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will support 3K video recording at 120fps with Dolby Vision. In comparison, the current iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max offer 4K video at 60fps, or 1080p video at 120fps or 240fps.

A Capture Button for All

The long-rumored Capture Button will also be included on all four iPhone 16 models. Positioned in the lower-right corner, the new Capture Button will naturally align with your index finger when holding the iPhone in landscape mode. As a capacitive button, it requires a touch to activate, reducing the chance of accidental presses when the phone is in your pocket.

The Capture Button is designed to work with both native and third-party camera apps, allowing users to adjust focus and zoom levels for better control over their photography. Additional features may include exposure adjustments, filter cycling, and background blur control.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are expected to feature larger displays, with the iPhone 16 Pro boasting a 6.3-inch screen (up from 6.1 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro) and the iPhone 16 Pro Max possibly offering a record-breaking 6.9-inch display. These high-end models may also see a price increase. For more information, take a look at the rumored prices for each iPhone 16 model.
