Well, what a surprise! The day has arrived when you can play games like Diablo directly in your web browser without needing to download them. That’s right—you can now enjoy Diablo and its expansion, Hellfire, right from any web browser on your PC. After stumbling upon a link in a random Reddit thread, I clicked it and was immediately transported into the depths of the game.
This impressive endeavor comes from a GitHub project called Diabloweb, which builds on the DevilutionX project. DevilutionX has been instrumental in optimizing the game for modern systems.
Running Diablo in my browser was just as straightforward as I’d hoped. I visited the official Diabloweb link and got started without any hassle. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need to upload the official Diablo 1 MPQ files for it to work. You can either use your own copy of the game or purchase it from GOG.com and extract the files from there.
Without those files, I clicked on the “Play Shareware” button, which offers a limited portion of the game. Even so, I had a great time exploring this classic and enjoying the pixelated music that takes me back.
The real surprise is that Diablo 1 is also playable on mobile devices! The screen scales automatically, and the game includes full virtual controls. Personally, I prefer sticking to my Mac for this experience, but it’s also easy to connect it to your TV for a larger display.
If you think people aren’t already diving into this, you’d be mistaken. Game developer Shayne Lynch shared on X how gamers are already showcasing their best moments with the game. Diablo 1 runs smoothly on all major web browsers and platforms. I experienced excellent frame rates and responsive controls, making the game even more enjoyable!
That said, it feels a bit surreal to see games I once played on a CRT monitor now available in a web browser. While the convenience is undeniable, I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic as I age.
What about you? How do you feel about playing Diablo 1 in this new way? Please Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below!
