Indie Publisher Humble Games Hit by Latest Round of Layoffs

Many video game companies have faced layoffs throughout 2024, and Humble Games is the latest to be affected. This publisher, known for popular indie hits like Midnight Fight Express and Signalis, has now let go of the very people behind these successful games, according to recent reports from the company.

The initial news was quite grim and remains so. Many former Humble Games employees took to social media to share their experiences.

For instance, Kenny Schwarz, a former producer at Humble Games, shared his thoughts on the layoffs on LinkedIn. A senior QA, Emilee Kiefer also shared her experience on X (formerly Twitter).

Nicola Kwan, who handled business development at Humble Games, revealed in a post that 36 employees were affected by the layoffs. Additionally, it was reported that the company has shut down following these layoffs.

In response to these posts and the ensuing discussions, Humble Games released an official statement. The company clarified that it is undergoing a restructuring process, not shutting down.

The statement emphasized their commitment to ensuring the stability and support of their developers and ongoing projects. It also highlighted that supporting their development partners and former team members is a top priority, and they are dedicated to making this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

It is unfortunate that, once again, developers bear the brunt of the impact, while publishers and C-suites remain largely unaffected. Humble Games, which was acquired by Ziff Davis through its IGN Entertainment subsidiary in 2017, has faced significant changes.

Earlier this year, Ziff Davis acquired Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, Rock Paper Shotgun, and VG247. Despite the layoffs, Humble Games is still responsible for publishing and supporting seven upcoming indie titles.

We sincerely hope those affected by these layoffs find new opportunities quickly. What are your thoughts on these layoffs? Let us know in the comments below.
