Starfield Game Director Confirms Mod Support Arriving Next Year


When Bethesda initially revealed Starfield, many fans were eager to learn about the possibility of mod support for the game. Bethesda’s previous titles had a thriving modding community that contributed to the games’ creativity and longevity. It appears that Todd Howard, the Game Director of Starfield, is well aware of this anticipation. According to a recent interview, there is a chance that mod support will be introduced to Starfield as soon as next year. So, if you were looking forward to creating custom planets, missions, and structures, you might have to exercise some patience.

Todd Howard Announces Starfield Mod Support Next Year

In a recent interview with the Japanese publication Famitsu, Todd Howard discussed various aspects of the game, including its evolution over the years, his passion for space, the inspiration behind the title, and the challenges of post-launch development. During the interview, Famitsu inquired about the timeline for official mod support in Starfield and when players would be able to create custom missions, creatures, and planets within the game.

Todd confirmed that players will indeed have the option to mod the game extensively, allowing them to make modifications from the beginning to the end. He further revealed that official mod support is planned to be introduced sometime next year. Todd emphasized the enthusiasm of the Bethesda Game Studios team for the creative possibilities that mods bring and assured that they intend to embrace modding in a significant way.

It’s worth noting the timeline for official mod support in Bethesda’s previous single-player RPG, Fallout 4. In that case, official mod tools were introduced approximately six months after the game’s initial launch. However, this didn’t deter modders from experimenting and creating mods for the game even before official tools were available. The same trend seems to be emerging for Starfield, with modders already releasing several impressive mods that enhance various aspects of the game, such as UI/UX and lighting.

Todd Howard’s recent comments align with statements made by Pete Hines, the head of publishing at Bethesda. Hines confirmed that while Starfield won’t have mod support at launch, it is planned to be implemented later. He mentioned that “they haven’t specified a precise release date for mod support but assured players that it will follow the established tradition of modding in Bethesda games, being available on both PC and Xbox platforms.

The potential delay in implementing mod support for Starfield could be attributed to the need for the game to accommodate mods on both Xbox and PC platforms. However, it’s worth noting that the Bethesda team has previous experience with enabling console modding through the Creation Suite, so this challenge might not be insurmountable.

The anticipation for modding in Starfield stems from Bethesda’s reputation for highly moddable games. Past titles like Skyrim have seen the creation of substantial mods like “The Forgotten Realms,” which evolved into a standalone game. Similarly, Fallout received mods like “A Tale of Two Wastelands,” merging the Capital Wastelands and the Mojave Desert from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, showcasing the vast creative potential of the modding community.
