Apple has initiated the rollout of the iOS 17.5 update for iPhones, introducing significant alterations, notably in tracking capabilities. Among the changes are enhancements to tracking an iPhone, including support for third-party trackers and a novel method for maintaining device traceability during repairs, among other updates.
Cross-Platform Tracking Detection Feature Introduced
The most notable addition is the Cross-Platform Tracking Detection feature. This new anti-tracking functionality enables iPhones to detect and disable third-party trackers (beyond AirTags) in the vicinity. To achieve this, Apple has collaborated with Google to develop a new system known as Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers (DULT). With this system in place, users will receive alerts when an unidentified tracker (not belonging to the user) is nearby, irrespective of the device’s operating system.
Similar to how unidentified AirTags trigger an “Item Found Moving With You” notification on your iPhone, the latest update enables your device to alert you when it detects any Bluetooth trackers nearby. Likewise, users on Android devices running version 6.0 or later will receive a “Tracker traveling with you” notification upon detecting an unknown tracker, including AirTags.
Upon receiving these alerts, users can access the tracker’s identifier, activate its ring feature to pinpoint its location, and follow instructions to disable it. Apple reports that manufacturers such as Chipolo, Eufy, Jio, Motorola, and Pebblebee have already committed to ensuring that their upcoming trackers adhere to this new safety standard.
Introducing Repair State Mode
In iOS 17.5, a new Repair State mode has been introduced within the Find My app. This functionality enables your iPhone to stay active on Apple’s Find My network while maintaining its Activation Lock. Previously, when sending your device for repair, it was necessary to disable Find My and Activation Lock before initiating the repair process.
With Repair State mode, users can utilize the “Remove This Device” option, which guides them through preparing their iPhone for repair. Once activated, this mode ensures that your iPhone remains traceable on the Find My network throughout the repair process.
Additional iOS 17.5 Updates
Building on the enhancements introduced in iOS 17.4, the latest update, iOS 17.5, extends the capabilities by allowing developers in the EU to offer their apps directly on their websites. This means users can now download apps without having to visit the App Store. However, there’s a caveat: only developers with a proven track record—having been active for at least two years and amassing over 1 million app installs in the last year—are eligible to offer web downloads.
Additionally, Apple has made minor improvements to the Apple News+ and Podcasts apps. Apple News+ now features a new built-in Quartiles word game and an offline mode for accessing your feed. Podcasts, on the other hand, receives new iOS widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen, along with dynamic background support. Furthermore, iOS users will find a collection of new Pride wallpapers for their Home Screen, each displaying vibrant strings of colors spelling out ‘pride’.
