Which iPads are Compatible with the New Apple Pencil Pro

Apple hosted its inaugural hardware event of 2024 today, concentrating solely on refreshing its iPad range. The company revealed two new iPads at its ‘Let Loose‘ event, marking nearly two years since its last iPad unveiling. Alongside the introduction of OLED iPad Pro and iPad Air models, Apple also unveiled a new ‘Apple Pencil Pro‘ with intriguing new features. For those curious about whether the Pro stylus will exclusively function with the new iPads or if it is compatible with existing iPads as well, we have the answer for you.

Compatibility List of Apple Pencil Pro

During the “Let Loose” event livestream, Apple revealed that the new Apple Pencil Pro will be compatible with the following iPad models:

  • 13-inch iPad Pro M4
  • 11-inch iPad Pro M4
  • 13-inch iPad Air M2
  • 11-inch iPad Air M2

Apple has chosen to limit support for the new Pencil Pro to its latest iPad lineup unveiled at the event today. Many expected the company to extend support to all recent M-series chip-powered iPads for the Pro pencil, but unfortunately, that is not the case. This news is particularly disappointing for users of previous-generation iPad Pro models, as their tablets are powered by the same chipset as the new iPad Air, the Apple M2.

In terms of features, the new Apple Pencil comes with Find My support, making it easier to locate the stylus when misplaced. However, the highlight is the addition of new barrel roll and squeeze gestures. The former detects when you rotate the pencil to change the direction of the brush or pen tool, while the latter allows you to open in-app palettes to change tools or colors. Additionally, the Apple Pencil Pro introduces haptic feedback support.

The new iPads and Apple Pencil Pro join the MacBook Air M3 from earlier this year. While these hardware announcements are exciting, I’m looking forward to WWDC 2024, which is only a month away now. I’m eager to see how Apple implements Generative AI to deliver brand-new features and innovations on iOS 18, iPadOS, and macOS.
