The Akita Inu Preservation Society, a dog society rooted in Japan, has adopted blockchain technology to create digital pedigree certificates for the esteemed Akita dog breed. This initiative aims to tackle counterfeiting and simplify administrative procedures.
As per a Japan Today report, this initiative is a result of collaboration between the Akita Inu Preservation Society and Meta Akita Inc., a local IT firm, along with Heirloom Inc., based in the United States. The society’s goal is to elevate the authenticity and convenience for dog owners.
In a media statement, a spokesperson for the Odate-centered canine community elucidated that the adoption of blockchain technology was catalyzed by an upsurge in international membership, escalating from roughly 300 members in 2022 to about 500 in 2023. This expansion, coupled with reports of counterfeit pedigree documents in China, led to the decision to integrate blockchain technology.

Presently, the dog society aims to overcome logistical challenges by transitioning to digital document management for transportation purposes. The restructured issuance procedure, accessible via the society’s website and a specialized smartphone application, is anticipated to expedite certificate delivery and provide owners with added confidence regarding their dogs’ pedigrees.
For a considerable duration, the capacity of blockchain to transparently monitor transactions has been acknowledged as one of its key applications. In 2021, Maharashtra, a highly industrialized state in India, embraced LegitDoc, a system powered by Ethereum blockchain developed by Crossforge Solutions Pvt Ltd, headquartered in Bangalore. This initiative aimed to address instances of certificate forgery by issuing digital diploma certificates.
