Epic Games Store and Fortnite are set to arrive on EU iPads in the near future!

The ongoing clash between Apple and Epic Games seems unending. After taking aim at iOS, the EU has turned its attention to the iPad. Following the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), iPadOS has been designated as another digital “gatekeeper.” Seizing on this decision, Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, have pledged to make Fortnite and the Epic Games Store accessible on iPads later this year.

Under the regulations, Apple has a six-month window to comply with the new rules, which may involve permitting app downloads from sources outside the App Store. Failure to comply could result in substantial fines for Apple. With these developments, many anticipate that iPadOS will undergo changes akin to those seen in iOS, potentially expanding options for app distribution.

Epic reveals plans for Fortnite on iPadOS.

In a recent post on X, Epic Games Newsroom addressed the European Commission’s call for Apple to adhere to the Digital Markets Act regarding iPads. As a result, Fortnite and the Epic Games Store will soon be accessible on iPads. Additionally, the Fortnite account on X provided insights into the availability of Fortnite for both iPhone and iPad.

Apple’s latest iOS 17.4 update responds to new EU regulations aimed at fostering fair competition in app marketplaces. While iOS 17.5 brings additional improvements, iOS 17.4 notably introduces features like app sideloading on iPhones and tweaks to the App Store and Safari. These changes set the stage for Epic Games to reintroduce Fortnite to Apple devices in compliance with the EU’s mandate.

It’s important to note that these adjustments apply exclusively to EU nations. Therefore, if you’re an Apple user outside the EU, you may not yet have access to Fortnite. As Apple must acknowledge and implement the changes outlined in the Digital Markets Act, it remains to be seen whether this will facilitate easier app distribution for developers on iOS and iPadOS.
