Threads Introduces ‘Trending Now’ Section, Bringing It Closer to X

In July last year, amidst the turmoil surrounding X (formerly Twitter), Meta launched its own Twitter alternative called Threads. Although the social media app initially garnered significant attention, the excitement quickly waned due to its lack of features that defined X. As a result, it struggled to maintain the audience’s interest over time.

While Threads has been striving to keep pace with X, it has not yet positioned itself as a platform conducive to discussions. However, this could be set to change following an announcement by Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, revealing that Threads will soon introduce a “Trending Now” section.

The Trending Now section will be accessible from the app’s Search tab, potentially replacing the people-to-follow suggestions or introducing a different layout. It will also be reachable from the For You section. Currently, the feature is only available in the US and is not widely accessible on the mobile app, but you can test it on the web version.

This addition could be a game-changer for Threads, as the trending page plays a crucial role in gaining attraction for stories on any platform. X has established itself as the platform where news breaks first, largely due to its trending section, which allows people to easily catch up and join the discussion. This makes X the go-to hub for discussions on various topics on the internet.

I believe this feature might be arriving too late to make a significant impact. It’s been nearly a year since Threads’ release, and it’s hard to see why users would be motivated to switch from X to Threads now. However, there’s still a chance that it could generate some excitement and potentially reengage users who previously used the app.

I tried Instagram Threads when it was first launched, and it was underwhelming. Even with recent improvements, there aren’t many users to interact with. Are you still using Threads, or would you consider using the platform if the Trending Now section is added? Share your thoughts in the comments.
