New Android 15 Privacy Feature Guards Against Screen Recording Scams

Google rolled out the stable release of Android 15 Beta 1 earlier this month, which was followed by a minor update, providing users with a relatively stable experience. Notably, Android 15 introduces numerous privacy-focused features. However, recent developments in Android’s code hint at further enhancements aimed at safeguarding sensitive information during screen recording.

Beginning with Android 13, Google has dedicated significant resources to bolstering privacy within the built-in screen recorder functionality. For instance, Android 14 introduced the capability to record a specific app’s content rather than capturing the entire screen.

However, even with the ability to record specific app content, there remains the possibility of inadvertently capturing sensitive information within an app, potentially compromising user privacy.

To address this concern, Android 15 introduces new screen recording privacy options. Notably, Android expert Mishaal Rahman uncovered a new setting within Developer Options called “Disable screen share protections.” This feature allows users to deactivate system safeguards for sensitive app content during upcoming screen sharing sessions.

He notes that the toggle is linked to an internal feature called “sensitive content protection,” which is currently disabled in the latest Android 15 Beta. While the specific functionality of this feature remains unclear, it is speculated that it may involve blurring certain areas of the screen during recording or screen-sharing sessions.

While blocking notifications from appearing during screen recording would have sufficed, Google seems to be taking additional steps to conceal sensitive content that may appear alongside notifications. Rahman suggests that managing the process of hiding such information could be delegated to an external application like Android System Intelligence.

What are your thoughts on the privacy enhancements to screen recording in Android 15? Do you feel satisfied with the privacy changes and advancements Google has implemented in Android over the past few years? Share your opinions and thoughts about this feature in below.
