Qualcomm has unveiled a new chipset in the premium 8 series segment. The new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset is positioned as a streamlined variant of the current-gen flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. While it shares many similarities with the 8 Gen 3, there are some minor downgrades.
The American chip maker stated that the new flagship 8 Gen 3 chipset has been tailored to improve the “performance to price ratio,” indicating a possible price reduction for 8 series chipsets with some trade-offs. Qualcomm claims that the new SoC offers “specially selected Snapdragon experiences.”
The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is equipped with eight Kryo CPU cores and is likely manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process node. It includes a single Cortex-X4 prime core with a maximum clock speed of 3.0GHz.
Additionally, there are 4x performance cores (Cortex-A720) running at 2.8GHz and 3x efficiency cores (Cortex-A520) running at 2.0GHz. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 features all three types of cores with slightly lower clock speeds (up to 400MHz) compared to those found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
The GPU in the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has undergone a slight downgrade. It features an underclocked Adreno GPU, likely the Adreno 735, which includes several high-end gaming features such as real-time HW-accelerated Ray Tracing, Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0, Shadow Denoiser, and others.
Moreover, the onboard Hexagon NPU is capable of running smaller AI models containing up to 10 billion parameters. Qualcomm has not released the TOPS figure for the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.
Regarding the camera capabilities, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 retains support for Cognitive ISP with triple 18-bit ISPs. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 also introduces real-time semantic segmentation for both photos and videos. The chipset supports capturing photos up to 200MP and, with zero-shutter lag (ZSL), it can capture photos up to 108MP in single-camera mode.
Additionally, the chipset supports dual-camera setups (64+36) and triple-camera setups (36+36+36) with ZSL. Qualcomm has also integrated support for Google Ultra HDR photo capture.
In terms of video capabilities, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports recording 4K HDR videos at 60 FPS. It includes features like Snapdragon Low Light Vision (LLV), Bokeh Engine 2, Super Resolution, noise reduction, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and more.
For connectivity, the chipset supports Bluetooth 5.4, Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) and Wi-Fi 7 (with peak speeds up to 5.8Gbps). It also includes the older Snapdragon X70 5G modem from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which was released in 2022.
Additionally, the chipset can be paired with up to UFS 4.0 storage and LPDDR5X RAM (with speeds up to 4200 MHz). It offers AV1 decoding support (but not encoding) and includes NavIC support.
