AirPods 4 Release Adds Complexity to Apple’s AirPods Lineup, Resembling iPad Range

Apple’s forthcoming AirPods lineup is anticipated to be its most significant release yet. Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s suppliers will commence mass production of two new models for the fourth generation of AirPods in May. With this schedule in mind, the arrival of the AirPods 4 is projected for September or October.

Rumors have been circulating about Apple’s plans to introduce multiple enhancements to its AirPods range, including two fresh variants of its 4th generation earbuds. Now, the supply chain is preparing for the autumn release. These two AirPods would signify the introduction of a new dual-tier lineup for the standard, non-Pro models.

According to Mark Gurman, Apple aims to produce between 20-25 million units of the 2024 AirPods lineup, signaling larger launch ambitions for the AirPods 4 compared to its predecessors. Production is set to commence officially in May through partners GoerTek and Luxshare Precision. Anticipated to coincide with the release of the iPhone 16 series, we can expect the AirPods 4 to hit the shelves in the fall.

Following lower sales of AirPods 3, Apple is strategizing to enhance the upcoming version for a resounding success. The anticipated AirPods 4 models are set to showcase a refreshed design for improved comfort, enhanced sound quality, and inclusion of a USB-C charging case. Gurman mentioned that the premium variant will additionally offer active noise cancellation and integrate a speaker in the charging case for Find My tracking functionality.

The two models are labeled as B768E and B768M, denoting “entry” and “mid-tier” options respectively. With these AirPods 4 models, Apple intends to phase out both its second-generation and third-generation AirPods simultaneously.

The lineup will expand to include four AirPods models: AirPods 4, AirPods 4 Mid-tier, AirPods Pro (2nd generation), and AirPods Max. The “mid-tier” option is anticipated to inherit some features from the AirPods Pro, positioning it between the entry-level AirPods and the premium AirPods Pro. This addition will cater to users seeking active noise cancellation and other advanced features without the need to invest in the Pro models.

Regarding the Pro models, Gurman doesn’t anticipate the release of the new AirPods Pro until 2025. However, the current AirPods Pro models are expected to receive a new hearing aid mode with iOS 18. Additionally, AirPods might introduce a hearing test feature.
