Apple Acquires Another AI Startup in Preparation for Generative AI Features

Generative AI has dominated discussions for nearly a year, igniting a fierce competition for on-device AI dominance, particularly with Apple’s response to Google’s Gemini Nano model. Quietly, Apple embarked on an AI startup acquisition spree to outmatch its rivals. Bloomberg reports that earlier this year, the tech giant from Cupertino acquired DarwinAI, a Canadian AI startup, to bolster its AI capabilities.

DarwinAI is known for its expertise in developing compact, swift, and highly efficient AI systems. Additionally, the company has pioneered AI technology for scrutinizing components throughout the manufacturing phase.

After the acquisition, DarwinAI’s website and social media profiles have been deactivated. Numerous former DarwinAI staff members, including AI researcher Alexander Wong, have transitioned to Apple’s Artificial Intelligence division. Wong, who played a pivotal role in DarwinAI’s development, now serves as a director within Apple’s AI team.

Apple maintains its tradition of secrecy regarding acquisitions and future strategies, typically stating, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time.” While this statement does not disclose specific intentions or forthcoming plans, observers speculate that Apple’s recent acquisitions signal a significant effort to incorporate on-device AI capabilities into its forthcoming software iterations and product range.

While Google, Microsoft, and other competitors have surged ahead in the AI arena, Apple is striving to narrow the gap. CEO Tim Cook has confirmed the imminent arrival of Apple’s Generative AI features later this year. Clearly, Apple is dedicating considerable effort to develop AI functionalities for its upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 operating systems.

To compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing, and other leading generative AI platforms, Apple aims to seamlessly integrate generative AI into its product ecosystem. Reports suggest that the company is currently testing expansive language models, with plans to incorporate AI features across various platforms including Siri, Apple Music, the Shortcuts app, Messages, and beyond. Anticipated enhancements include a more intelligent voice assistant dubbed “Siri 2.0,” greatly influenced by advanced AI capabilities.

Due to privacy concerns, Apple intends to execute AI features directly on-device, potentially leveraging DarwinAI’s expertise in developing compact AI systems. With WWDC 2024 on the horizon, anticipation mounts as we await Apple’s unveiling of how it will harness its AI innovations in forthcoming software upgrades and product releases.
