The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) has been around since 1996, known for its exclusivity and the thrill of collecting cards, whether they’re shiny Charizards or simply high-stat cards. During the pandemic, the demand for Pokémon cards surged, prompting the production of nearly 9 million cards. Therefore, when the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket (a mobile version) was announced at the Pokémon Presents event on February 27, it didn’t come as a surprise.
Developed by Creatures Inc., the original creators of the Pokémon TCG, and DeNA Co., Ltd., Pokémon TCG Pocket aims to bring the essence of the TCG to Android and iOS devices. The game is set to be released in 2024, with a hands-on presentation showcasing its features at the event.
Features of Pokemon TCG Pocket
During the showcase, more features of the game were revealed. Since the game will be entirely digital, the challenge has always been how to adapt the card game to a digital format. According to the developers, the cards will offer an immersive experience. This immersive style, which focuses on the card’s illustration, will make players feel as though they are inside the world of Pokémon.
In addition to an unpacking feature, trading is another key aspect of the game. As we’ve seen with YouTubers and Twitch streamers, unpacking Pokémon trading cards with their audience and selling them for a significant value is a popular activity. Similarly, the built-in trading features in the game will make it easier for players to engage in this activity.
While the trading feature is not confirmed to be available at launch, it is expected to be a significant part of the game, as players enjoy building their own collections.
The Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket will be released as a free-to-play experience for both iOS and Android users. It has been reported that players will receive two free packs every day, with the option to purchase additional packs also available. While the value of digital trading cards remains to be seen, any cards obtained, even from the free packs, will be permanently owned by the player. This means that even if acquired through free packs, players will have full ownership of the cards they receive.
As an enthusiastic card collector, I’ve always dreamed of having a digital Pokemon card collection. With franchises like Marvel Snap and others already thriving in the TCG market, it’s clear that this project has been overdue. Now, it’s just a matter of time before Pikachu and the rest of the gang make their mark in the digital TCG scene.
As time progresses, The Pokemon Company is undoubtedly eager to regain momentum with fans. Will the launch of Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket on mobile help reignite that popularity? With competitors like Palworld in the mix, it’s clear that the company faces a tough challenge.
We’re curious to hear your thoughts on having trading cards in your pocket. We’d love to hear what you have to say about having trading cards right in your pocket.
