After a prolonged anticipation, Apple is poised to introduce ProMotion Always-on Display technology to its entire iPhone range with the upcoming iPhone 17 series. Set for release in 2025, both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will sport OLED displays equipped with LTPO technology, according to the latest report. This marks the debut of ProMotion displays on the standard iPhone models.
As per The Elec, Chinese supplier BOE is anticipated to provide LTPO panels to Apple for its iPhone 17 lineup. Yet, uncertainties exist regarding whether BOE can fulfil production capacity needs while maintaining Apple’s quality standards. If BOE falls short, Apple may turn to alternative suppliers like LG and Samsung for LTPO panel sourcing. Meanwhile, for LPTS-based OLED panels, Apple could continue partnering with BOE for other iPhone models and the forthcoming iPhone SE4.
The LTPO technology debuted with the iPhone 13 Pro models, enabling the ProMotion feature. Subsequently, it was leveraged to support Always-on displays on the iPhone 14 Pro models by enabling a lower refresh rate.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus currently use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels, while the more advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels are exclusive to the flagship iPhone 15 Pro models. LTPO panels support ProMotion, allowing for a stunning 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animations.
Additionally, ProMotion technology enables the display to drop to a refresh rate as low as 1Hz, minimizing power consumption. This allows the Pro models to include an Always-on display that provides essential information at a glance, even when the device is locked.
Looking ahead to the iPhone 16 series, Apple is expected to continue using the less advanced LPTS panels in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models. This decision is likely made to maintain a clear distinction between the standard and flagship models.
However, Apple is set to change this exclusivity formula in 2025. The iPhone 17 series will be the first to feature ProMotion technology and Always-on displays across the entire lineup.
According to Display analyst Ross Young, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models will adopt a taller aspect ratio of 19.6:9. This change will be passed on to the standard iPhone 17 models the following year. Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will feature larger displays. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to increase from 6.12 inches to 6.3 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max could become the largest iPhone ever with a massive 6.9-inch display.
Providing ProMotion Always-on Display technology across the entire iPhone lineup will be a significant change. After years of continuous requests, Apple finally appears to have listened to its users. This much-needed change will undoubtedly impress users who want to enjoy a top-notch display experience on an iPhone without having to spend on the Pro models.
