Xiaomi is gearing up for the global launch of the Xiaomi 14 series, scheduled to take place in less than a week. The company’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, recently posted renders of the device on X, hinting at some impressive camera features that could rival the Galaxy S24 Ultra in picture quality.
Confirming previous leaks and rumors, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will feature a quad-camera setup. The camera setup comprises a 50MP primary camera with a 1-inch sensor, a secondary 50MP ultrawide camera, a third 50MP 3.2X telephoto lens, and a fourth 50MP 5X telephoto lens.
The primary 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor is expected to be the standout feature of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s camera setup. Its larger sensor size allows for more light to be captured, resulting in improved low-light performance. In comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra features the ISOCELL HP2 sensor, which has a smaller size of 1/1.3 inches (approximately 0.8 inches), making it slightly inferior in terms of light capture.
As per Xiaomi’s announcement on Weibo, both telephoto lenses in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra use the Sony IMX858 sensors. These lenses feature f/1.8 and f/2.5 apertures, with the latter being a significant improvement over last year’s f/3.0 aperture. This is notably different from Samsung’s approach, which uses an f/3.4 zoom lens.
On paper, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra seems set to excel not just in everyday low-light photography but also in nighttime zoom shots. However, the actual performance will depend on the quality of post-processing, setting the stage for an intriguing competition.
The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is set to launch in China on February 22, followed by a global launch on February 25. Alongside its impressive camera setup, the device boasts a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, and 16GB of LPDR5X RAM.
