I will never tire of horror games, no matter what! As a seasoned veteran, I’ve explored some of the most underrated horror games across various meta-genres. However, this journey has also taught me that horror doesn’t always have to involve ghosts. That’s why I was thrilled when Jurassic Park: Survival was teased at The Game Awards 2023. With no clear release date in sight, I craved that thrill immediately.
Fortunately, my search led me to Jurassic Park in the form of a Fortnite creative map. Titled “Dino Dread Island,” this spooky map completely blew my mind. It offered me the same excitement as a full-fledged AAA horror title, all within Fortnite, and at no cost. Intrigued? Keep reading as I share why I believe you should try out this Fortnite creative map as well.
Experience Hollywood-Level Cinematics
When it comes to games within a game, there’s often an assumption that they won’t be as visually impressive as standalone games, right? Well, that’s not the case with the Fortnite creative map, Dread Island. Created by X (formerly Twitter) user @JSFILMZ0412, this map delivers a cinematic experience that feels remarkably close to the unreal world of Jurassic Park.
In addition to the cinematics, the animations are reminiscent of a Resident Evil remaster game. And I don’t say that lightly. Furthermore, if you equip Leon from your Fortnite shop, you might feel like you’re truly immersed in the Jurassic Park world.
The flashlight attached to your in-game pistol adds to the immersive feeling of navigating through unfamiliar surroundings, especially in the tight tunnels. It’s hard to believe that such a game is available for free within Fortnite.
Additionally, the game’s cinematic and graphical brilliance extends to the facial expressions, with custom animations for both your character and all the dinosaurs in the game.
Beware of the Dinosaurs
If the trailer for Jurassic Park: Survival gave you chills, you’ll be pleased to know that this map captures that atmosphere quite well. The game focuses on survival against terrifying creatures that react to every sound or action you make. The AI that runs the dinosaurs is pretty good, and it feels as if they have real brains.
While the dinosaurs do follow a pattern in their idle movement, once they detect you, it’s game over. If they spot you, you’ll need to run as fast as you can. Each dinosaur type has its own set of strengths, adding to the thrill of hiding or fighting these beasts.
Jurassic World Atmosphere and Egg Locations
While fleeing for your life can be thrilling, it’s important to take a moment to appreciate the spooky atmosphere. After all, a chilling horror experience is incomplete without the right environment and audio, right? That is exactly what you get in Dino Dread Island.
Crafted with the right balance of silence and eerie noises, the map delivers goosebumps when you hear the dinosaurs’ footsteps. The environment keeps you on edge, always alert for unseen threats. I recommend trying the game with full stereo headphones.
The level design is intricately linked with the audio, keeping you vigilant for valuable resources like eggs that unlock the next level, useful weapons, and the intriguing easter egg (10 mini dragon statues).
All these items are cleverly concealed in the environment, creating a sense of crawling through the depths of the unknown to survive. The environmental lighting encourages the use of your torch to explore your surroundings, particularly in the dimly lit facility, enhancing the perfect atmosphere for a free horror experience.
Weapons, Combat & Vending Machines
What I particularly enjoy about this game is the combat mechanics. In typical horror survival scenarios, we often encounter various combat approaches. Some games, like Alan Wake 2 (review), arm you with a torch, while others, like Outlast, provide a camera. Personally, I prefer having weaponry over being unarmed. Fortunately, in Dino Dread Island, you have access to enough firearms to fend off the creatures.
However, the creator ensures that ammunition isn’t plentiful, requiring effort to locate firearms initially. In case you can’t find a gun, you’ll have to rely on your trusty knife. Additionally, you can play detective and scavenge for coins. These coins allow you to upgrade your weapons using vending machines. So, while upgrading is encouraged, it’s essential to remain cautious of your ammunition supply.
In Dino Dread Island, players will experience slower traversal than typical Fortnite movement, and jumping is disabled. This makes running away from dinosaurs a last-resort option if they detect you. Stealth becomes crucial in avoiding detection.
These aspects of Dino Dread Island kept me hooked for several hours, drawing me away from The Finals and LEGO Fortnite. Additionally, after spending a few hours playing, I’ve found myself struggling to sleep, especially since it’s currently winter here. If you’re looking for a horror experience without the hefty price tag of a AAA game, I highly recommend giving this Fortnite creative map a try!
