Although OpenAI has been discreet about the release of GPT-5, the company has been consistently enhancing ChatGPT with new features. The latest addition is a ‘memory’ function, allowing the AI chatbot to remember user identities and preferences. This aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s vision to personalize the ChatGPT experience for users, marking a significant stride in that direction.
ChatGPT Aims to Understand Your True Identity
The memory feature operates akin to website cookies, tracking your browsing behavior to create a profile reflecting your preferences and interests. Similarly, in ChatGPT, this memory function records details like your preference for bullet-pointed action items, your ownership of a coffee shop, or your daughter’s fascination with jellyfish.
OpenAI asserts that retaining essential user details can enhance ChatGPT’s assistance in future interactions, sparing users from repetitive information input. The memory feature is being extended to both free and Plus users of ChatGPT, although it is currently being introduced to a limited subset of users.
The memory feature will be automatically activated by default, which could be unsettling for some users. To address this concern, there is a “Temporary Chat mode,” akin to incognito mode, where users can engage in conversations without any information being retained by ChatGPT.
How to Turn Off Memory in ChatGPT
To deactivate the feature, you just need to click on your name located at the bottom right corner. Then, navigate to Settings and proceed to the “Personalization” section on the left sidebar. Within this section, simply switch off the new “Memory” option to revert to using the chatbot as you did before, without it storing any information about you.
The company emphasizes that users have complete control over ChatGPT’s memory. They can delete memories or disable it altogether directly from the Settings page (Settings -> Personalization -> Manage). Additionally, users can also request ChatGPT to forget something during their conversations.
Please be aware that OpenAI may utilize your data, including memories, for the purpose of enhancing its models. This policy applies to both free and paid users. If you prefer not to allow the company to use your data for training purposes, you will need to deactivate Chat History entirely. However, it’s worth noting that data from ChatGPT Team and Enterprise users is not utilized for training at all.
