Next-Generation GDDR7 Memory for GPUs to Debut at ISSCC 2024 Conference


Samsung Electronics, a leader in the semiconductor industry, is poised to debut GDDR7 memory at the 2024 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). Alongside Samsung, SK Hynix will also present their GDDR7 memory at the conference, sponsored by IEEE.

Scheduled for February in San Francisco, this event is anticipated to draw attention from chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD, who are expected to integrate GDDR7 memory into their upcoming graphics cards. GDDR7 memory is slated to deliver significant enhancements over previous-generation memory architectures.

According to the ISSCC 2024 conference timetable, Samsung’s session is set to commence on February 20th at 10:30 AM, while SK Hynix has a spot at 8:00 AM. Both companies are poised to unveil their cutting-edge graphics memory technology.

GDDR stands for Graphics Double Data Rate, and this type of memory is designed to enhance computing performance for graphics-intensive tasks. While Micron-based GDDR7 is expected to debut in 2026, it’s likely that we’ll hear more about GDDR7 being integrated into consumer products at that time. Currently, the introduction of Samsung and SK Hynix’s new graphics memory modules marks a significant advancement in the field. However, in the future, we may witness even faster memory technologies, such as GDDR7X.

In 2023, Samsung announced the completion of the development of Graphics Double Data Rate 7 DRAM (GDDR7). The company touted GDDR7’s higher bandwidth, which is 1.4 times greater than its predecessor, GDDR6.

The industry eagerly anticipates which generation of GPUs will incorporate this latest graphics memory standard. While hopes are high, it’s unlikely that upcoming GPUs from major chipmakers, such as the RTX 50 series, will feature GDDR7. However, subsequent generations are expected to adopt GDDR7 as the standard.

The upcoming GDDR7 memory, set to be unveiled at the ISSCC 2024 conference, promises lower power consumption with enhanced efficiency. Reportedly 20% more efficient than its predecessor GDDR6, this new design is anticipated to feature a lower operating voltage, particularly beneficial for laptops.
