In a peculiar legal development, Take-Two Interactive has raised objections regarding Remedy Entertainment’s recent logo change. The company, known for Alan Wake 2 (review), altered its iconic logo to a new one before the game’s launch last year. While things appeared calm for a while, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, 2K, and Private Division, has expressed concerns about this alteration.
As initially reported by RespawnFirst, Take-Two Interactive takes issue with Remedy Entertainment’s extensive use of the letter R in the new logo. The company filed a trademark dispute, contending that the revamped logo has the potential to confuse gamers between Remedy Games and Rockstar Games, the powerhouse behind Grand Theft Auto.
X (formerly Twitter) user @usemyhandle also posted about the legal dispute on their account. According to the shared information, the litigation was initiated in May 2023 at the UK’s Intellectual Property Office. The legal challenge by Take-Two encompasses two versions of the Remedy logo.
The first version features the standard Remedy logo with the company name, while the other includes the Remedy logo with the R symbol. For clarity, these are the two logos that Take-Two has raised concerns about. The company contends that Remedy’s logos bear too close a resemblance to the Rockstar logo.
From an outsider’s perspective, this lawsuit seems puzzling based on Take-Two’s claims. The logo of Rockstar Games has become iconic, with the unmistakable R and star on a yellow background easily recognizable by anyone.
Even individuals not involved in video games might identify that logo. Therefore, asserting that the new Remedy logo could cause confusion among gamers appears to be an exaggerated concern. The situation becomes even more perplexing when considering that Remedy Entertainment is working on the Max Payne Remakes for Rockstar Games.
Nevertheless, it’s important to acknowledge that the companies have a positive working relationship with each other. Hence, there is optimism that they will resolve the matter over time. Nevertheless, this legal dispute has certainly sparked some amusement.
