Dimensity 7200 Pro vs Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 vs Snapdragon 782G: Benchmark Performance

Nothing has finally unveiled its mid-range smartphone, the Nothing Phone 2a, succeeding the Nothing Phone 1. It is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, which Nothing claims is a customized chipset with improved efficiency. How does the Dimensity 7200 Pro compare to mid-range Qualcomm chipsets like the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and Snapdragon 782G? Let’s delve into an extensive benchmark comparison to find out.

Note: This comparison uses the new Nothing Phone 2a with the Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset. Other phones included in the comparison are the Poco X6 with Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and the OnePlus Nord CE 3 with Snapdragon 782G.

Specs Overview

Here is a specification comparison between the Dimensity 7200 Pro, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, and Snapdragon 782G.

Geekbench 6

Let’s start by comparing the CPU performance using Geekbench 6 between the Dimensity 7200 Pro, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, and Snapdragon 782G. The Nothing Phone 2a (review), powered by the Dimensity 7200 Pro (4nm), achieved scores of 1,114 and 2,561 in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

On the other hand, the Poco X6, equipped with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 (4nm), scored 1,032 in the single-core test, slightly below the Dimensity 7200 Pro. However, it achieved the highest score of 2,978 points in the multi-core test.

The Poco X6’s inclusion of 4x Cortex-A78 cores, despite being older, has led to excellent multi-core performance. In contrast, the Dimensity 7200 Pro features newer ARM cores but only has 2x Cortex-A715 cores.

Turning our attention to the OnePlus Nord CE 3, which runs on the older Snapdragon 782G (6nm) processor, it attained an impressive single-core score of 1,135 and a commendable multi-core score of 2,947. However, the older process node may impact battery life. Additionally, it utilizes the older Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 cores.

In summary, the Nothing Phone 2a is not focused on high performance, but rather on handling everyday tasks smoothly. Nothing has prioritized efficiency over raw performance, resulting in a device that offers good performance without compromising battery life.

CPU Throttling Test

In the CPU throttling test, the Snapdragon 782G in the OnePlus Nord CE 3 demonstrated better performance compared to the Dimensity 7200 Pro and Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. This exceptional performance can be attributed to OnePlus’s inclusion of a large vapor chamber cooling system in the Nord CE 3.

The vapor chamber helps dissipate heat quickly, allowing the CPU to maintain performance over a longer period. However, the Dimensity 7200 Pro in the Nothing Phone 2a also performed admirably, with no noticeable performance drop. Its instruction execution still closely resembles that of the Snapdragon 782G. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 performed the worst in the CPU throttling test.

AnTuTu Benchmark

Transitioning to the AnTuTu benchmark test comparing the Dimensity 7200 Pro, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, and Snapdragon 782G, the Nothing Phone 2a achieved the highest score with a total of 708,424 points. In contrast, the Poco X6, powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, received the lowest score of 584,141 points.

The Snapdragon 782G also performed admirably, scoring 704,138 points, but it fell short of surpassing the Dimensity 7200 Pro.

The AnTuTu benchmark results unequivocally demonstrate the exceptional performance of the Mali G610 MC4 GPU on the Dimensity 7200 Pro. It’s worth noting that Nothing opted for UFS 2.2 storage, while OnePlus has included faster UFS 3.1 storage.

During the AnTuTu test, the Nothing Phone 2a registered a peak temperature of 39°C on the back and 40°C on the front.

3DMark GPU Test

To assess the Mali G610 MC4 GPU’s performance on the Dimensity 7200 Pro, we conducted the 3DMark Wild Life Stress test. The Nothing Phone 2a achieved the best loop score of 4,130 with a stability of 99.2%. In comparison, the Adreno 710 GPU in the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 could only manage a best loop score of 3,029.

The older Adreno 642 GPU on the Snapdragon 782G performed even worse, achieving a best loop score of 2,861. In our gaming tests, the Nothing Phone 2a performed admirably. We did not observe any stutters while playing games like BGMI, CoD Mobile, and Asphalt 9. Even on Genshin Impact, with medium graphics settings, the gameplay was smooth.

Connectivity 5G Speed Test

Finally, we conducted our 5G speed test. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, featuring Qualcomm’s X62 5G modem, performed admirably, achieving peak download speeds of 637 Mbps and peak upload speeds of 70.7 Mbps. It’s important to note that this test was conducted on an Airtel 5G network. However, its performance was not as impressive on Jio’s 5G network.

Next, the Snapdragon 782G reached a peak download speed of 426 Mbps and a peak upload speed of 16.9 Mbps. MediaTek’s 5G modem in the Dimensity 7200 Pro achieved 361 Mbps in download speed and 29.3 Mbps in upload speed. These tests were conducted on Jio’s 5G network.

The Verdict

After analyzing all the benchmark comparisons, it seems that Nothing has opted for a well-rounded and capable chipset for the Nothing Phone 2a. By avoiding older ARM cores found in the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and Snapdragon 782G, Nothing has focused on efficiency rather than raw performance. This approach is evident in our battery life tests, where we achieved over 7 hours and 30 minutes of screen-on time.

That being said, the performance of the Dimensity 7200 Pro in the Phone 2a is quite impressive. With newer ARM cores and a 4nm process node from TSMC, the chipset offers solid performance. Additionally, its GPU performance surpasses that of other competing chipsets, allowing users to enjoy light gaming as well.

What are your thoughts on the Dimensity 7200 Pro’s performance in synthetic benchmarks? Would you choose the Nothing Phone 2a over the Poco X6 and OnePlus Nord CE 3 in the sub-Rs. 25,000 segment? Let us know in the comments.
