India is known for being a price-sensitive market, and big tech companies are well aware of this. That’s why services like YouTube Premium have maintained stable pricing for over five years. However, Google has now decided to increase the cost of its Premium subscription. Here’s everything you need to know about the YouTube Premium price hike in India.
YouTube Premium was introduced in India in 2019, and since then, the prices for individual monthly and annual subscriptions have remained at Rs 129 and Rs 1,290, respectively. The same stability applied to the Family and student monthly plans. Here’s a look at the new prices for each plan following the increase.
YouTube Premium Price Hike: New Pricing
This price increase was anticipated, as many services have been raising their subscription rates. The hikes for the individual and student monthly plans are relatively minor. However, the Family Monthly plan sees the most significant impact, with a substantial 58% price increase.
For those unfamiliar, YouTube Premium provides ad-free videos, background playback, and several other features, all of which we’ve detailed here. The subscription also includes YouTube Music, offering background playback and personalized recommendations based on your tastes. It’s like getting two services in one package.
In a statement regarding the price increase, the YouTube team commented, “We don’t make these decisions lightly, and this update will enable us to continue enhancing Premium and supporting the creators and artists you enjoy on YouTube.”
Existing YouTube Premium subscribers will soon receive an email requesting approval of the new pricing. Failure to agree to the updated rates will result in the cancellation of your current subscription.
There’s speculation that Google might also raise the prices of its Google One subscriptions, which haven’t seen an increase since their launch in India. For those who may not know, Google One offers additional cloud storage and various perks for Google account users.
