Google’s Gemini AI chatbot is set to replace the popular Google Assistant as the default assistant on Android devices. However, it falls short in several areas compared to Google Assistant. One such missing feature was the ability to search and play music directly from the YouTube Music app. Google seems to be addressing this issue with the upcoming release of a new YouTube Music extension for Gemini.
According to a report by Android Authority and their contributor AssembleDebug, the YouTube Music extension for Gemini can be enabled in the Google app v15.17.28.29.arm64. As shown in the attached screenshots, users need to enable the extension from the Extensions menu in Gemini. Once enabled, users will be able to ask the AI queries related to YouTube Music.
Users can utilize the YouTube Music extension to instruct the AI chatbot to play music and search for songs, playlists, artists, and albums. Additionally, it may be possible to discover new tracks based on one’s current mood. The extension will tailor suggestions based on the user’s listening preferences from their YouTube Music account. It’s important to note that this data may be shared with other extensions if the conversation necessitates it.
This feature will be distinct from the Music Provider option, which allows users to set a default music player and supports a wider range of services. The YouTube Music extension, on the other hand, is specifically designed for searches and queries within Gemini. While the extension is not currently available, it may be released soon, possibly around or shortly after Google I/O 2024.
Enabling music playback directly from Gemini adds valuable functionality to the AI chatbot, which has so far fallen short of matching the capabilities of Google Assistant. While Gemini may be more intelligent in certain aspects, it lacks the ability to perform basic tasks such as creating reminders and opening apps on a smartphone. While the introduction of the YouTube Music extension is a positive step, I hope Google is also focused on enhancing Gemini and integrating Assistant features into it.
