Popular chipmakers for smartphones include Qualcomm, Mediatek, and Samsung. Xiaomi is poised to join the race, according to a report from Counterpoint Research. Mediatek CEO Rick Tsai mentioned a purported partnership between ARM and Xiaomi.
The CEO of Mediatek remarks, “I can’t speculate on Xiaomi’s success in this venture,” essentially confirming a covert collaboration between ARM and Xiaomi on dedicated processors for Xiaomi devices!
This development means Xiaomi could break away from relying on Mediatek or Qualcomm for processors. They could emulate Samsung, which has its Exynos chips, by introducing phones powered by Xiaomi SoCs. This prospect is thrilling, and if successful, it would mark a significant milestone for Xiaomi.
Xiaomi provides exceptional value with its mid-range and flagship smartphones. The introduction of their own processors could bring about significant changes for future Xiaomi devices, including smartphones, gadgets, and even their electric car project.
Perhaps, Xiaomi will enhance the value proposition of their technology even further. The anticipated ARM chips developed by Xiaomi, in collaboration with ARM, are likely to debut in their smartphones initially, pending successful developments.
Developing custom Xiaomi processors could enable them to finely tailor and heavily optimize the user experience on upcoming devices!
The report also mentions that Oppo had previously ventured into developing its own processors. However, the project was reportedly halted in 2023 due to declining smartphone market conditions and project-related challenges. Now, ARM is set to collaborate with Xiaomi to create a smartphone chipset.
Speculation abounds regarding the manufacturer of the processors. Notably, Apple’s A-Series Bionic chips are produced by TSMC, while Google Pixel’s Tensor chips are manufactured by Samsung.
Currently, the timeline for Xiaomi’s completion of ARM-based processor development remains uncertain. As noted by the Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research in the report, chip design is a complex endeavor. We’ll keep you informed of any progress in Xiaomi and ARM’s chip partnership.
