Xiaomi is known for many things, including MIUI, their in-house Android skin that has garnered both praise and criticism. MIUI is celebrated for its extensive customization options, offering some of the deepest personalization features available on any Android skin. Today, Xiaomi’s Founder and CEO, Lei Jun, announced Xiaomi HyperOS on Twitter, revealing that it will first launch on the Xiaomi 14 series. The new flagship models are expected to be released by the end of October. Although there were previous reports suggesting a transition from MIUI to MiOS, it appears that the next iteration of Xiaomi’s operating system will be named HyperOS.
Xiaomi HyperOS Launch Date
It has been confirmed that HyperOS will debut alongside the Xiaomi 14 series, expected to launch by the end of October 2023. Xiaomi’s VP has also announced that HyperOS will be available globally and “will be rolled out throughout 2024.”
You might be wondering whether HyperOS is an independent operating system or based on Android. Given that companies like Huawei have introduced their own HarmonyOS for the Chinese market, the idea of Xiaomi developing its own OS isn’t far-fetched.
On Weibo, Lei Jun confirmed that HyperOS will be “based on the integration of a deeply evolved Android and the self-developed Vela system, completely rewriting the underlying architecture and preparing a foundation for the Internet of Everything, supporting tens of billions of devices and connections in the future.”
This clarifies that HyperOS will not be an independent operating system but will be built upon Android.
HyperOS Features
As the announcement is recent, there is still no information about what HyperOS will look like or Xiaomi’s plans for it. Will the OS be less bloated for a global audience? Will HyperOS offer a near-stock AOSP experience with some Xiaomi features added? Many questions remain unanswered and are likely to be revealed as we approach the launch of the Xiaomi 14 Series.
HyperOS presents a great opportunity for Xiaomi to deliver a seamless experience across all their devices, potentially allowing for faster updates and extended update cycles, inspired by Google’s recent Pixel 8 announcement. It also offers Xiaomi a chance to build a cohesive ecosystem, something the company has been known for but has struggled to integrate as seamlessly as other manufacturers.
It will be intriguing to see what Xiaomi has planned for HyperOS. What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments below.
