On Wednesday, Elon Musk’s snarky xAI chatbot Grok began generating posts about white genocide in South Africa even in threads and tags entirely unrelated to the topic. The unexpected behavior raised eyebrows across the platform, prompting questions about the source of such responses. Now, xAI has finally issued an explanation.

The xAI team attributed the unusual “White Genocide” posts to an “unauthorized modification” of Grok. They explained, “This change, which directed Grok to provide a specific response on a political topic, violated xAI’s internal policies and core values. We have conducted a thorough investigation and are implementing measures to enhance Grok’s transparency and reliability.”

It appears the modification to Grok’s prompt was made by an internal team member. In an effort to rebuild public trust, xAI has announced plans to “publish our Grok system prompts openly on GitHub,” allowing the public to review and provide feedback on every prompt change. Additionally, the team will implement stricter checks within their existing code review process.

With all that said, the motive behind this unauthorized change remains unclear, as does what Grok was trying to highlight with the unusual responses. This isn’t the first incident involving Grok either the chatbot previously stopped posting any news related to President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, particularly when the content reflected negatively on them.
