X (formerly Twitter) has officially made Likes completely private for all users, with the update rolling out universally. Rumored for some time, the change was recently confirmed by an X engineer. A previously restricted feature has now been made available to all users, regardless of their subscription status.
The change aims to enable users to like content freely without scrutiny or judgment. In the past, the content you expressed appreciation for on the platform was visible to others through a dedicated section on your user profile. Now, the Likes tab no longer appears for other users, meaning it’s only visible on your own profile and not on others’.
Furthermore, tapping on a post no longer reveals the users who have liked it, except for the person who shared the post originally.
In reaction to this update, Elon Musk posted, emphasizing the importance of allowing people to like posts without fear of criticism. The X CEO also shared a graph illustrating the rise in likes on the platform following the implementation of this change.
The reaction to this change has been varied, but generally, users appear to view it positively. Many appreciate the platform’s move towards enhanced privacy. While the previous transparency of likes encouraged responsibility, some users feel it restricted their freedom to enjoy content without judgment, a sentiment expressed widely on the platform.
