WhatsApp Web Could Soon Get Voice and Video Calling Features

For many users, WhatsApp remains the preferred choice for voice and video calls, especially in regions like the subcontinent where the platform is widely used. While mobile, Windows, and macOS versions of WhatsApp already support calling features, the web client has so far lacked this functionality. That, however, could soon change.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently developing voice and video calling capabilities for its web version. Although there’s no confirmed release date yet, once the feature is live, users will notice new camera and phone icons in the top-right corner of chat windows just like on the desktop apps allowing direct voice and video calls from the browser.

This is great news for users who are unable to run WhatsApp on Windows due to limited system resources. Similar to the desktop apps, WhatsApp Web is also expected to notify users of incoming calls and allow them to receive them seamlessly.

Furthermore, users should be able to switch between voice and video calls directly within a conversation. By adding such functionality, WhatsApp Web becomes more versatile, helping to narrow the feature gap between it and the Windows/macOS apps.

An often overlooked use case that stands to benefit from this update is ChromeOS. Although it supports running WhatsApp’s Windows and Linux clients, installing them can be challenging for the average user. In this context, the web version could serve as a more accessible alternative, reducing the need for dedicated desktop apps.
